The Abyssinian cat is one of the oldest feline breeds. Defined for its movements like the miniature puma, it attracts the gattophiles of the whole world with its elegant aesthetic harmony. It is among the ten most widespread in the United States and among the five in North America, while in Europe and in Italy it is less widespread. The Abyssinians are cats of medium build, short-haired, with an elegant posture and strong individuality. The coat has an intense color and the ticking is clearly visible (every single hair has a base color, interrupted by two or three bands of darker pigment and always ends with the dark tip). Its particular physical characteristics make it the fastest and most agile cat among all feline breeds. Since the Abyssinians are carriers of the gene responsible for the long hair, it is always possible that in a litter there are some semi-longhair kitten (Somalo). It can reach even 18-20 years of age. The Somali cat is the medium-long hair variant of the Abyssinian, from which it differs only for the length of the hair, since the two breed standards correspond. Somali is a combination of beauty and personality. The first thing that catches our attention is the beauty and uniqueness of the Somali. The semi-long coat of Somali is soft and airy, the coat has an extraordinary color, it almost seems to have a mane. The eyes are amber-colored, the big ears, the long mustache and the fluent and vaporous tail, always worn with a plume, it looks like that of a squirrel. Warning! Somali can be addictive. Once you've had one, you may find that no other cat can ever replace it.

It is not surprising that the breed is a favourite of many home owners and cat lovers. The Somali breed is one breed of cat with many clubs established by Somali cat owners across the world. Elliott Lang says: I have always been in the company of animals. That is the one thing I am most thankful for. My lovely pets have always been around to provide unconditional affection and love when I needed it the most. My father was instrumental in making me grow fond of animals. He always kept me around animals. My family have always been hands on with the pets in the household. Whether it was bathing, feeding or taking care of these animals, my family ensured that the animals got the best of everything. These animals were the centre of all our activities. There was not a single day that did not begin with a discussion about these pets. What to feed them? How to take care of a cat or dog that is ailing? What is the most nutritious thing to feed them? These were common dinner table conversations while I was growing up. So, needless to say, I have had a lot of practical training with respect to taking care of different breeds of animals. Today, I am in a very privileged place where I can share this information with pet lovers across the globe. I would have never been able to provide you with so much comprehensive information without the knowledge that I gained from my father, my family and of course my beloved cats.

The Somali cat is a long-haired breed that has its origins in the Abyssinian cat. Presented below is a concise account of the historical background of Somali cats: - Origin: The history of the Somali cat may be traced back to the 1950s, when breeders first observed the presence of long-haired kittens in litters of Abyssinian cats. The initial long-haired Abyssinian cat, named "Raby Chuffa of Selene," was born in 1953 in the United Kingdom. - Acknowledgment: Initially, the presence of Abyssinians with long hair was not widely embraced, and their existence was mainly disregarded. Nevertheless, certain breeders recognized the inherent qualities of these cats and embarked on a mission to formally establish them as a unique breed. - Breed Development: During the 1960s, breeders engaged in selective breeding of long-haired Abyssinians to preserve the breed's distinctive traits while encouraging the growth of a longer coat. The outcome was the creation of the Somali cat, named after the country Somalia, which lies in close proximity to Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia), the birthplace of the Abyssinian breed. - The Somali cat was officially acknowledged and accepted by cat societies throughout the 1970s. The International Cat Association (TICA) granted official recognition to it in 1979, and subsequently, other prominent cat registries followed suit. - Somali cats are characterized by their distinctive features, which include a voluminous tail, a coat with ticking patterns resembling the Abyssinian breed, prominent almond-shaped eyes, and ears adorned with tufts of hair. They are available in a range of colors, such as ruddy, red, blue, and fawn. - Personality: Somali cats are distinguished for their lively and energetic disposition. They possess high levels of intelligence, exhibit sociable behavior, and frequently establish robust connections with their owners. They derive pleasure from engaging in interactive play and have a tendency to express themselves vocally. - Popularity: Somali cats have experienced a surge in popularity as domesticated pets throughout the years. Due to their distinctive appearance and amiable personalities, they are highly favored by cat fans. Currently, Somali cats are acknowledged and valued in the realm of cat enthusiasts, actively taking part in several cat exhibitions and contests. They are still highly valued as affectionate and energetic companions worldwide.
