Devon Albright seemingly has it all. A successful businessman, hes leveraged every advantage his gracious life has ever offered to him. The years have also been kind to him, and his tall, athletic physique served him well in both his professional and his personal life. He is charming, influential, and above all, a good friend. For half a century, his friendship with Andrew Sanders has been a constant source of happiness, support, and comfort. Andrew has not weathered the decades with as much grace or success, but his friendship never wavers. As a child living in Africa with his family, Devon made his first true friend in a local boy named Gabbie. The son of the Albrights gardener, the two quickly became inseparable. It broke Devons heart to leave his friend behind. Now, fifty years later, Andrew tells Devon that Gabbie is in trouble and needs their help. The two embark on a long and dangerous journey to save an old friend at any cost. The risk is extreme, Devon realizes, but that is sometimes the cost of friendship.

LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD FINALIST A transgender reporter's "powerful, profoundly moving" narrative tour through the surprisingly vibrant queer communities sprouting up in red states (New York Times Book Review), offering a vision of a stronger, more humane America. Ten years ago, Samantha Allen was a suit-and-tie-wearing Mormon missionary. Now she's a GLAAD Award-winning journalist happily married to another woman. A lot in her life has changed, but what hasn't changed is her deep love of Red State America, and of queer people who stay in so-called "flyover country" rather than moving to the liberal coasts. In Real Queer America, Allen takes us on a cross-country road-trip stretching all the way from Provo, Utah to the Rio Grande Valley to the Bible Belt to the Deep South. Her motto for the trip: "Something gay every day." Making pit stops at drag shows, political rallies, and hubs of queer life across the heartland, she introduces us to scores of extraordinary LGBT people working for change, from the first openly transgender mayor in Texas history to the manager of the only queer night club in Bloomington, Indiana, and many more. Capturing profound cultural shifts underway in unexpected places and revealing a national network of chosen family fighting for a better world, Real Queer America is a treasure trove of uplifting stories and a much-needed source of hope and inspiration in these divided times.

"An analytical approach to corporate reputations from its leading scholar. Public perception, especially in the time of social media, is a core determinant of any organization's success and longevity. It is also fickle: organizations can fall astray of public approval through crisis, mismanagement, or sudden shifts in the public sensibility. In Reputation Analytics, Daniel Diermeier offers the first scientific framework for understanding and managing the vagaries of corporate reputation and public opinion. Drawing on a political scientist's understanding of the formation and dynamics of public opinion, Diermeier infuses his approach with lessons from game theory, psychology, and text analytics to produce a rigorous, altogether original approach that will have immediate application in both scholarship and practice. A milestone work from one of social science's most eminent scholars, Reputation Analytics ushers a new and advanced understanding on a topic that has long eluded such treatment-and an essential work for readers across industry and academics"--

Genre: History
ISBN: 0252076400

This on-the-ground labor history focuses on the bitterly contested labor conflict in the early 1990s at the A. E. Staley corn processing plant in Decatur, Illinois, where workers waged one of the most hard-fought struggles in recent labor history. Originally family-owned, A. E. Staley was bought out by the multinational conglomerate Tate & Lyle, which immediately launched a full-scale assault on its union workforce. Allied Industrial Workers Local 837 responded by educating and mobilizing its members, organizing strong support from the religious and black communities, building a national and international solidarity movement, and engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the plant gates. Drawing on seventy-five interviews, videotapes of every union meeting, and their own active involvement organizing with the Staley workers, Steven K. Ashby and C. J. Hawking bring the workers' voices to the fore and reveal their innovative tactics, such as work-to-rule and solidarity committees, that inform and strengthen today's labor movement.
