Often times it is so difficult that it becomes a 'do or die' game. Running for office and staying there becomes personal. So much so, that it isn't uncommon to be courted by higher ranking members of political parties. This is how fair warning for repercussions occurs. This is what often times happens behind the scenes of the political machine. It is the give and take methodology to holding public office. However, the message may seem simple, a politician either does what they are told, or risks losing it all. For many in politics, it becomes difficult to maintain a "no strings attached" philosophy to governing when being a member of the political machine. Breaking away is risky. Although it is the political reformer who is able to break the ties that binds politicians. These are the politicians, the modern day Abraham Lincolns that are able to hold to an oath. For the very few in public office that follow this way of thinking, this is what is known as the solemn vow.

A search for a man armed with a rifle that hasn’t been shot since the war of 1812 leads to an investigation that takes Marc Edwards from a newspaper office into the mansions of the Family Compact, and even to the local brewery, as the clues he uncovers point closer and closer to home. Now lieutenant in charge of security at Government House in Toronto, Marc Edwards is eager for action in both his personal and professional life. His letters to Beth Smallman in Crawford Corners have gone unanswered and writing speeches for Lieutenant Governor Francis Bond Head is not the stuff of excitement. Then, during an election speech by Bond Head, a shot fells a government minister sitting just behind him and Marc on the hustings. Marc’s troop gallops after an armed man who flees the scene, killing him when he points his rifle at Marc’s chest. Then they discover that the rifle has not been fired since the war of 1812. Mortified by his troop’s mistake, Marc accepts the help of Horatio Cobb, one of Toronto’s three constables in its brand new police force. He also accepts the affections of Eliza Dewart-Smythe, who is almost, but not quite, as beguiling as Beth. His investigation takes him from William Lyon Mackenzie’s newspaper office into the mansions of the Family Compact, and to the local brewery, as the clues he uncovers point closer and closer to home.

It is the greatest achievement of Saint Thomas Aquinas and one of the most influential works of Western literature and Philosophy. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern Philosophy was conceived as a reaction against, or as an agreement with, his ideas, particularly in the areas of Ethics, Natural Law, Metaphysics, and Political Theory. It is intended as a manual for beginners in Theology and a Compendium of all of the main Theological teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian Theology in the West. The book is famous, among other things, for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinque viae. The Summa Theologica's topics follow a cycle: The Existence of God; Creation, Man; Man's Purpose; Christ; The Sacraments; and back to God. The first part is on God. In it, he gives five proofs for God’s existence as well as an explication of His attributes. He argues for the actuality and incorporeality of God as the unmoved mover and describes how God moves through His thinking and willing. The second part is on Ethics. Thomas argues for a variation of the Aristotelian Virtue Ethics. However, unlike Aristotle, he argues for a connection between the virtuous man and God by explaining how the virtuous act is one towards the blessedness of the Beatific Vision (beata visio). The last part of the Summa is on Christ and was unfinished when Thomas died. In it, he shows how Christ not only offers salvation, but represents and protects humanity on Earth and in Heaven. This part also briefly discusses the sacraments and eschatology. The Summa remains the most influential of Thomas’s works. Saint Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican Priest, born near Aquino, Sicily in 1225. He was an immensely influential Philosopher and Theologian in the tradition of Scholasticism, known as Doctor Angelicus. He died in 1274. As one of the 33 Doctors of the Church, he is considered the Church's greatest Theologian and Philosopher. Thomas is held in the Catholic Church to be the model teacher for those studying for the priesthood. He was canonized in 1323. PUBLISHER: CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING
