Excerpt from A Student's Book on Soils and Manures Whatever kind of farming a man is going in for, he depends in the last instance either on his own soil or on somebody else's, and unless he thoroughly understands the principles of soil management he will not be very successful in the crop production part of his work. These principles can of course be acquired by experience, but the process is likely to be costly, and the young farmer of to-day is invited to attend Farm Institutes or Colleges where he can be taught them and be thus spared some of the bitterness of the older method. By learning something about the soil and about fertilisers he will be in a position to attain greater success in his farming. But the man who simply studies the subject to make a little more money will miss nine-tenths of the pleasure of the work and of the joy of farming. The soil is to be regarded not simply as a mine out of which a little wealth may be extracted, but as a part of Nature, just as wonderful and as worthy of study as any other part. Excerpt from Soils and Manures In a few instances analytical methods have been briefly outlined as a convenient plan of developing certain ideas, but details have been avoided. Many of the figures relating to the composition of manures are taken from published reports by Dr. Voelcker and others, but some of them are average results of numerous analyses made by the author. Excerpt from Fertility of Soils as Affected by Manures The use of manures as a means of increasing the growth of crops dates back to ancient times. At the time of the discovery of America, the North American Indians used dead, fish as a manure for corn. The Peruvians have used guano since the beginning of their recorded history, and the Chinese have long recognized the value of all kinds of excrements as fertilizers. In the early part of the last century De Saussure established the existence of the mineral constituents Of the' soil in plants, and while he believed that they Were essential to the life of plants, his contemporaries regarded them as nonessential, or at the best useful only as a kind of Stimulant. Excerpt from Soils and Fertilizers It is evident from the preceding example that any thing like an adequate idea of the growth and compo sitiou of plant bodies could not be gained until the composition of air and water was established. The discovery of oxygen by Priestley in 1774, of the composition of water by Cavendish in 1781, and of the r61e which carbon dioxide plays in plant and animal life by De Saussure and others in 1800, formed the nucleus of our present knowledge regarding the sources of matter stored up in plants. It was between 1760 and 1800 that alchemy lost its grip because of advances in knowledge and the way was opened for the development of modern chemistry. Excerpt from Soils and Manures in New Zealand In studying, a soil in the laboratory it is usual to separate some of its components from one another, and such a process is called a mechanical analysis. A sample is washed with weak acid, and afterwards by ammonia, and then rubbed gently in a dish, by which process the particles of soil are freed from one another, so that, partly by means of sieves, and partly by stirring the soil in water, when the particles settle down in order according to their size and weight, the whole sample can be graded according to size into fractions. In order to be able to compare two soils on the basis of such an analysis it is necessary that the method of treatment of the two should be the same. For that reason British agriculturists have adopted a method which separates the soil into particles of the size shown in the table, and to which the names shown in the first column are applied. Excerpt from Soils and Soil Fertility The business of the farmer is to produce the various food materials and those from which clothing is made. These materials are of both animal and vegetable origin; but since all agricultural animals must depend on vegeta tion for their food, the growth Of farm crops forms the basis of all agriculture. Excerpt from For the Analysis of Soils, Limestones, and Manures This little work is not intended to compete with treatises on chemical analysis, such as those of Rose and Fresenius, which are the text-books of the accomplished analyst. Originally published as an Appendix to my Lectures on Agricultural Chemistry and Geology, it has been much in demand also in a separate form. I have, therefore, given to this third edition a more widely practical bearing, by including limestones, clays, ironstones, manures, and natural waters, among the substances to be analysed. I have briefly explained, also, the principles on which analysis by measure is founded - a method which is susceptible of many simple practical applications. The Instructions are as few and simple as the subject well admits of, and the advancing student will proceed from this little manual to the many larger works which are within his reach. To the schoolmaster, the farmer, the pharmaceutical chemist and druggist, the youthful student, and to the rural, the training or normal school, and the agricultural laboratory, I offer it as a First Help To Practical And Economical Chemical Analysis. Though small in size, it will materially aid them in those chemical investigations which, in connection with agriculture and the arts, are every day becoming more sought for, and more necessary. With a view to easy reference, I have added a copious Index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known. Excerpt from Manures and Fertilizers: A d104-Book for College Students and a Work of Reference for All Interested in the Scientific Aspects of Modern Farming The preparation of this volume was undertaken for the purpose of meeting a distinct lack in collegiate agricultural textbooks in the United States. It was hoped to prepare a book reasonably free from extended details, such as are found in certain of the larger foreign works, and likewise to avoid the rather superficial treatment of the subjects which has necessarily characterized many of the books which have been written for the purpose of meeting the earlier requirements of the American agricultural colleges, and the present demands of agricultural high schools. The intent has been to provide in a measure for the needs of the graduate student in agriculture; also for the requirements of students in the agricultural colleges, teachers in agricultural schools, graduates of agricultural schools and colleges, agricultural institute lecturers, and the rapidly increasing number of intelligent men who are daily interesting themselves in the scientific phases of modern farming. In connection with the treatment of some of the newer and more controversial phases of certain of the topics, authorities have been cited freely, in order that the reader may readily pursue the subjects further, if desired. These citations have been introduced at the bottom of the respective pages, so as to permit of more convenient and ready reference than would be possible if they were placed at the ends of chapters, or at the end of the volume.
