On the same field liming may be beneficial at first but injurious later; for example, Ohio and Massachusetts. Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant: The Effect Upon the Composition of the Tobacco Plant of the Form in Which Nitrogen Is Supplied A priori it would seem that ammonium salts are more readily available for use in the synthesis of tissue components than nitrates since there is little doubt that nitrates must be reduced to ammonia, or to substances of an allied nature, before the nitrogen can be assimilated. Such differences may find their expression in many ways, but one obvious difference would be in the disposition of the plants grown with nitrogen supplied in one or the other form to store the excess of absorbed nitrogen without chemical change. It is well known that many plants store nitrate nitrogen, sometimes in surprising quantities. Storage of substantial amounts of ammonium nitrogen is, however, a much less commonly encountered, although by no means rare, phenomenon. Excerpt from Flue-Cured Tobacco in Canada: Growing Flue-Cured Tobacco in Ontario; Tobacco Soils, Rotations, Fertilizers; Co-Operative Experiments The mould. - Tho soil on which the seedlings are to be grown should be fertile and well supplied with vegetable matter in an advanced stage of decay. A large percentage of the failures in the production of plants, which the writer has observed, were due to the soil being too sandy and lacking in humus. Such a soil packs too tightly for the proper development of the seedlings; and. Too, the light-coloured saml apparently gives up its heat more quickly than a darker soil. And the growth of the plants is checked by a lack of heat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
