Excerpt from Socialism and the Workingman The following Essays were written during spare moments, now and then, just as the subject suggested itself. The reader need not expect anything like a full treatment of any of the subjects of the different sections. My object was to repeat and emphasise some main idea under the various headings, so that the ordinary reader might get a grasp of some principle which would serve to direct him in forming a correct opinion on the manifold side-issues arising out of the main subject. I shall be satisfied to know that I have succeeded in this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Socialism Means Slavery for the Working Man Being myself a mechanic and ever deeply interested, as I am to-day, in the uplifting of the toiling masses, I entered upon the study of Socialism with the avowed intention of joining the movement if I found its platform, plans, and purposes to be honest, practicable, and progressive. I there fore hope that in reading this statement of my final conclu sions, every Socialist will in fairness extend to me the right he claims for himself - the simple right to express my own thoughts, the right to paint the picture as I myself see it. Excerpt from The Problems and Perils of Socialism: Letters to a Working Man In concluding this Introduction I desire to thank the Rev. R. H. Law for allowing me to reprint in an Appendix his spirited verses To a Socialist Friend. Excerpt from Socialism and Christianity More clergymen are interested in the workingman's problems than can be found in any other intellectual group. This is truer now than it was twenty years ago when Prof. Ely of Wisconsin University made the statement. The reason for this attentive bearing of clergymen toward workingmen is not hostility to the rich or prejudice in favor of the poor; it is merely that individual, human valuation which Christianity inculcates; it is the democratic Spirit which Christianity in its origin, in its primitive exhibition, and in its more direct influence, at any time, displays. Excerpt from A Letter to American Workingmen: From the Socialist Soviet Republic of Russia Four years of imperialistic slaughter have left their trace. Irrefutably and clearly events have shown to the people that both imperialistic groups, the English as well as the German, have been playing false. The four years of war have shown in their effects the great law of capitalism in all wars; that he who is richest and mightiest profits the most, takes the great est share of the spoils while he who is weakest is exploited, martyred, oppressed and outraged to the utmost. In the number of its colonial possessions, English imperial ism has always been more powerful than any of the other countries. England has lost not aspan of its acquired land. On the other hand it has acquired control of all German colonies in Africa, has occupied Mesopotamia and Palestine. Excerpt from Socialism and the Social Movement Socialism, in the meaning of the word here adopted, is the intellectual embodiment of the modern Social Move ment. That, in its turn, is the conception of all the attempts at emancipation on the part of the proletariat one of the social classes of our time. In order fully to understand the subject under discussion it will be meces sary to form a true notion of what is meant by a social class in general, and in particular Of the social class which is of special interest to us here. By the term social class, then, I understand a social group, the individuals of which are the representatives of some economic system. In using the words economic system I mean a given economic order, or an economic condition of things, which is characterized by one or more prominent economic principles. Any economic order is, in my view, the sum-total of all legal and moral ideas which regulate production and distribution for the time being; and economic principles is the name I give to that chain of motives which influences the economic activities of individuals. This will become clearer when we apply these abstract ideas to concrete conditions of the present day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
