Excerpt from Socialism and the Survival of the Fittest The Mississippi delta is a triangular stretch of country beginning at the seashore at either side of the river's mouth. And extending. Or rather narrowing. To a point some two hundred miles up the stream. It is formed of alluvial matter deposited in a manner about to be described. The Mississippi. With the Missouri. Is the longest river in the world. And is fed by numerous tribui[.y streams. Ll. In fact. Drains an immense area. At some part or other of this area floods are constantly occurring. Everybody knows that floods of even moderate dimensions wash away river banks and bottoms and carry the solid matter downward towards the'sea. Thus is the Mississippi constantly being charged at some point with leaves or grass or earth. As the river and its tributaries take their rise in high altitudes. The water flows rather rapidly and carries the solid matter along. This happens until a point is reached about two hundred miles from the sea. Here a level country is encountered. The river widens. The water flows sluggishly. And the solid matter is gradually but surely deposited on the bottom. Lt happens that this part of the world is peculiarly adapted for the production of cypress trees. If an area be cleared it will be found to be covered with a cypress forest in a very short time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Excerpt from The New Socialism This little book, written with the purpose of presenting in a popular and readable form, ideas which have been treated more seriously elsewhere, is almost wholly descriptive of a form of social and industrial organization which the writer conceives to be in harmony with the principle of social justice elsewhere enunciated. The problem of practical socialism is as old as civilization. In all centuries men have dreamed of a golden age in which all things would be made perfect, and have struggled to devise laws and systems under which men might cooperate in harmony, and all have sufficient for their needs. Yet, at the present day, the problem appears to be as little understood as in the beginning. From the time of Moses and Plato to that of the more modern Utopian imaginings which hold our interest for a passing day and are soon forgotten, philosophers have left but futile records of their speculations. Hence men have come to think of the problem as one which does not come within the sphere of exact science. He who claims to have reached a solution of the problem must necessarily face an incredulous audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Socialism, Utopian and Scientific This little volume is an exact reproduction of the standard English translation of one of the most noteworthy books of the nineteenth cen tury. To Engels scarcely less than to Marx is due the impetus to clear thinking which has placed the Socialism of continental Europe in a commanding position, where it is recognized as the hope of the workers and the terror of the rul ers. Socialism utopian and scientific has been translated into the language of every capi talist nation, and wherever it has gone it has been an inspiration. Excerpt from Socialism and the Workingman The following Essays were written during spare moments, now and then, just as the subject suggested itself. The reader need not expect anything like a full treatment of any of the subjects of the different sections. My object was to repeat and emphasise some main idea under the various headings, so that the ordinary reader might get a grasp of some principle which would serve to direct him in forming a correct opinion on the manifold side-issues arising out of the main subject. I shall be satisfied to know that I have succeeded in this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
