Excerpt from Sketches of Tranent in the Olden Time Upon that monstrous mud-heap called The Mound, Which helps to join Edina old and new, But spoils a very pretty piece of ground, And in the lovely vale obstructs the view; And where Fine Art the blunder to increase Has placed two buildings in the style of Greece, There stood a Gael named Alastair MacCraw, Who, by a quarry-shot was rendered blind, And he, attention to his case to draw, A barrel-organ all day long did grind; And many when they saw his eye-balls dim Pitied and gave a coin, - but not to him! For close beside him stood a crafty jade Who as his lawful help-mate tried to look, And whilst the Gael the weary organ played The spurious wife the coppers quietly took; And grateful glances on the givers cast; - But this impostor was found out at last. How many authors is like that Gael we find, Who even when the public ear they gain, To tricks of trade and worldly cunning blind Employ their mental organs all in vain; Who labour hard, but still make little of it, For some sharp publisher takes all the profit. Excerpt from Our Old Home: A Series of English Sketches Such, in short, was the dusky and stiļ¬‚ed chamber in which I Spent wearily a considerable portion of more than four good years of my existence. At first, to be quite frank with the reader, I looked upon it as not altogether fit to be tenanted by the commercial representative of so great and prosperous a country as the United States then were; and I should speedily have transferred my head-quarters to airier and loftier apart ments, except for the prudent consideration that my Govern ment would have left me thus to support its dignity at my own personal expense. Besides, a long line of distinguished pre decessors, of whom the latest is now a gallant general under the Union banner, had found the locality good enough for them; it might certam be tolerated, therefore, by an individual so little ambitions of external magnificence as myself. So I settled quietly down, striking some of my roots into such soil as I could find, adapting myself to circumstances; and with so much success, that, though from first to last, I hated the very sight of the little room, I should yet have felt a singular kind of reluctance in changing it for a better. Excerpt from Twelve Dramatic Sketches: Founded on the Pastoral Poetry of Scotland It may perhaps be asked, what particular claims the Author has to be credited on this point, and what induced him to give these Sketches to the world? To the country he owes his birth; there he spent all the bright years of infancy, boyhood, and early youth among ru ral scenes and rural manners, the capacities of his heart were first called into action; and in the country it was, that while listening to the Words of experience, virtue, and religion, from the lips of manya sage and manly peasant, his mind acquired what must continue to be its own peculiar modification of character. Circum stances, which it is unnecessary to relate, ha ving obliged him to mingle in other scenes, the recollection of earlier and sweeter days, fre quently incited him to the perusal of pastoral poetry; from which, however, he failed to de rive all the pleasure which he had anticipated. Far as it is from his thought or intention to dis sent from the long-established fame of Theo critus and Virgil, he must be allowed to say.
