Austrian manufacturers, 'to preserve their trade, had to trans planttheir factories to Hungary. 1to repress this new-bow spirit the-court at Vienna fell upon the device of appointing paid Imperial commissioners at the'vh'ead of'the counties, instead _of' the lord-lieutenants, who were the old constitutional heads. This the more stirred agitation. The reform leaders from every quarter of the king dom met at Pesth, during the quarterly fairs of 1846 and 1847, to which the people from all, parts came, the nee'dful measures of reform were publicly discussed one by one, and in every detail determined; Atxthe head 'of this movementpas chairman of the meetings, was the late Count Louis Batthyani. Kossuth made able speeches, and rose in popularity; he was not merely eloquent, but practical. Batthyani/ felt his im portance, and exerted himself to, the utmost to 'secure his election to the Diet for the county of Pesth. The Diet met in November, 1847. Previously, the project of re form of the Liberals had 'be)en' published, and, immediately the Diet met, .the law abolishing the 'feudal service of the tenants and - the immunity of the nobles from tax artion passed the Lower House. Daniel Webster captured the hearts and imagination of the American people of the first half of the nineteenth century. This bibliography on Webster brings together for the first time a comprehensive guide to the vast amount of literature written by and about this extraordinary man who dwarfed most of his contemporaries. This bibliography also provides references to materials on slavery, the tariff, banking, Indian affairs, legal and constitutional development, international affairs, western expansion, and economic and political developments in general. This bibliography is divided into fifteen sections and covers every aspect of Webster's distinguished career. Sections I and II deal primarily with Webster's writings and with those of his contemporaries. Sections III through X cover the literature dealing with his family background; childhood and education, his long service in the United States House of Representatives and in the Senate, his two stints as secretary of state, and his career in law. Section X provides guidance in locating materials relating to his associates. Finally, Sections XI through XV provide coverage of his personal life, his death, historiographical materials, and iconography.
