Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott, as a Critic of Literature The lack of any adequate discussion of Scott's critical work is a sufficient reason for the undertaking of this study, the subject of which was suggested to me more than three years ago by Professor Trent of Columbia University. We still use critical essays and monumental editions prepared by the author of the Waverley novels, but the criticism has been so overshadowed by the romances that its importance is scarcely recognized. It is valuable in itself, as well as in the opportunity it offers of considering the relation of the critical to the creative mood, an especially interesting problem when it is presented concretely in the work of a great writer. No complete bibliography of Scott's writings has been published, and perhaps none is possible in the case of an author who wrote so much anonymously. The present attempt includes some at least of the books and articles commonly left unnoticed, which are chiefly of a critical or scholarly character. I am glad to record my gratitude to Professor William Allan Neilson, now of Harvard University, and to Professors A. H. Thorndike, W.W. Lawrence, G. P. Krapp, and J. E. Spingarn, of Columbia, for suggestions in connection with various parts of the work. From the beginning Professor Trent has helped me constantly by his advice as well as by the inspiration of his scholarship, and my debt to him is one which can be understood only by the many students who have known his kindness. George Saintsbury's novel "Sir Walter Scott" is part of the Great Scots Series of biographical novels. It is a biography and literary critique of the legendary 18th century novelist and playwright, famed for the classic novel 'Ivanhoe' among other great works. Saintsbury defends yet another biography of Scott by stating that, "His own matchless character and the genius of his first biographer combined to set before the world early an idea, of which it is safe to say that nothing that should lower it need be feared, and hardly anything to heighten it can be reasonably hoped. But as fresh items of illustrative detail are made public, there can be no harm in endeavouring to incorporate something of what they give us in fresh abstracts and aperçus from time to time."

Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott Criticism will not be attempted, because it would demand more space than it is thought well to occupy because the pre sent writer lacks the disposition for it; because the World is now Scott's judge, and because such criticism can be best gathered from the prefaces and notes to the numerous editions of his works. But to write a true biography, a history of the man's life, and to do so faithfully and lovingly, is all that has been here attempted. Excerpt from Recollections of Sir Walter Scott, Bart On this ground alone (namely, just ap preciation of character), the merits of the following sketch, if it has any, must rest. In the mere statement of events and dates (which, comparatively, are unimportant), there may be errors, which the writer, up to the present hour, had no opportunity to correct, if he had been solicitous to do so. But, instead of feeling anxious on that ao count, some anachronisms were, in one chapter, purposely introduced for the sake of promoting the author's wish (at the out set) to remain anonymous. Excerpt from Memoir of Sir Walter Scott, Bart: With Critical Notices of His Writings At a proper age he was sent to the High School of Edinburgh, then under the superintendence of Dr Alexander Adam. In this school he passed through the different forms without exhibiting any of those extraordinary owersgof genius which are seldom remembered til the person to whom they are ascribed has become, by the maturity of his talents, an 0 'ect of distinction. It is said that he was conside in his boyhood rather heavy than otherwise, and that the late Dr Hugh Blair had discernment enough to predict his future eminence when the master of the school Lamented his dulness. But this only afl'ords another instance of the fallacy of human opinion in pronouncing upon the real capacity of the understanding. Barrow. The greatest scho age, was discarded as a dunce h successive and his pupil, the illustrious ewton, was to be fit for nothing but to drive the team, friends succeeded in getting him transpl college. Excerpt from The Wisdom of Sir Walter: Criticisms and Opinions Collected From the Waverley Novels and Lockhart's Life of Sir Walter Scott I have only to repeat, that I avow myself in print, as formerly in words, the sole and unassisted Author of all the Novels published as works of the 'author of Waverley.' I do this without shame, for I am unconscious that there is anything in their composition which deserves reproach, either on the score of religion or morality; and without any feeling of exultation, because, whatever may have been their temporary success, I am well aware how much their reputation depends upon the caprice of fashion and I have already mentioned the precarious tenure by which it is held as a reason for displaying no great avidity in grasping at the possession.
