Make the most of every instructional minute with engaging literacy activities Time--or lack thereof--may be the most precious commodity in the classroom. From covering all the necessary curriculum and imparting life skills to attending meetings and answering emails, educators are faced with real challenges when there never seems to be enough time to do it all. Although teachers don't have the power to create more minutes in the school day, they do have the power to be effective and efficient with the time given. Molly Ness asks teachers first to examine their use of time in the classroom in order to make more space for literacy. She then introduces 40 innovative activities designed to replace seatwork. These literacy-rich alternatives for classroom transitions are presented alongside Research on instructional time in K-5 classrooms Strategies for how to maximize every minute of instruction Suggestions for improving efficiency to expand independent reading and writing time Reflective practices to help teachers examine how they use the time they have The instructional day is ripe for redesign with a thoughtful and authentic time audit. Every Minute Matters guides educators through that process by outlining literacy-rich activities to optimize transitional times and minimize lost instructional minutes.

This book consists of an easy-to-follow plan designed to guide and assist parents in nurturing and developing pre-reading/pre-literacy skills needed to learn how to read. Parents/caregivers begin their journey by examining and exploring why some children have difficulty learning to read. It is also noted the role they can play in preparing their children for the learning to read process at home. They are guided through the development of pre-reading milestones and behavior characteristics of young children. Additionally, parents/caregivers complete a self-assessment to determine their thoughts about learning which is important in setting up a creative and vibrant learning environment for their home. Before addressing the four components of the reading process, parents/caregivers are guided in setting the stage for learning to reading their home by establishing a print rich environment.

Sight words are words that must become automatically recognized by the reader because they are often not pronounced or spelled in regular ways. Our resource will increase sight word recognition, vocabulary and comprehension as students identify 130 Dolch sight words using real-life pictures as an aid. Write the sight word in the boxes that match the shape of the word. Boxes are used to help students come to understand that words can be recognized by the shapes of their letters, as they contain small, tall or hanging letters. Finish the sentence by matching the sight words with their boxes. Make sure that the words not only fit inside the boxes, but also make sense within the sentence. With 100 high-frequency words that make up almost 50% of everything we read as adults, having a bank of high frequency words is essential to building fluent reading skills. Aligned to your State Standards and written to Bloom's Taxonomy, reproducible writing tasks, sight word flash cards, crossword, word search, comprehension quiz and answer key are also included.
