Short Story Press Presents One Winter Moment by Alicia Danielle Voss-Guillén "One Winter Moment," is an intriguingly original coming-of-age story, a delicate romance that delves beneath the surface to explore our various family dynamics and the ways in which they shape us, influence us, and make us who we are. Romance, passion, family, and cultures collide when twenty-year-old college student Giorgio Meducci finds himself faced with the decision of a lifetime. Torn between beautiful Meghan Elliot, the girl of his dreams, and his fear of disappointing the close-knit Italian family he adores, Giorgio has an age-old dilemma all of us have grappled with at one time or another: is it more important to follow his family or to follow his heart? If he follows his family and leaves Meghan for the "ideal Italian girl," whomever that may be, he knows he will regret the decision for the rest of his life. If, however, he follows his heart and stays with Meghan, he will inevitably be forced to confront the reality of having ashamed his family and once again being upstaged by his older brother and younger sister, both of whom can do no wrong in the eyes of their parents. To complicate the matter, Meghan is growing weary of Giorgio's secrecy where their relationship is concerned. She demands that Giorgio make up his mind, one way or the other, by New Year's Day. January first is fast approaching, and Giorgio is in a panic. It does not help matters that his brother Claudio, Claudio's perfect Italian wife, and their two beautiful little girls are staying with the Meduccis over the holidays, or that Claudio delights in teasing Giorgio about his own future Italian wife. Giorgio is tired of his lies, his deceit, his sneaking around. He wants to date Meghan openly, while at the same time he deeply desires to be a source of pride for his mother and father. It appears at this time that he cannot have both, and the reality of it breaks his heart. How he live with only half of a heart? Moreover, more importantly, what will he decide when the clock strikes twelve on New Year's Day? Inspired by a real-life teenage romance of her own in which she found herself in a less dramatic variation of Meghan Elliot's situation, Voss-Guillén has decided to write from the opposite point of view, imagining the dilemma that an individual such as Giorgio Meducci is forced to confront. Although Giorgio's situation may be unique to his character, the feelings with which he grapples are familiar to us all. Writing "One Winter Moment" was a learning experience for the author, enabling her to sympathize with both of the viewpoints between which Giorgio oscillates, and to gain appreciation for the strong cultural pride of a family such as the Meduccis. In addition to "One Winter Moment," Voss-Guillén is the author of the three-book middle-reader Tori Series (Just Tori, Tori and the New Girl, and Tori's Wish), published by Price World Publishing and available online through a variety of booksellers, as well as numerous other short stories and novellas for young adults and children. Voss-Guillén is a freelance writer/editor and ghostwriter living in Wheaton, Illinois. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Short Story Press Presents Getting Micky Dolenz by Alicia Voss-Guillen “Getting Micky Dolenz” is a funny, touching, heart-warming story that will appeal equally to young adults, pop-culture lovers, and Monkees fans of all ages. Peppered with humor and full of heart, this is the tale of Julie Desmond—or, as she likes to call herself—Julie Desmond Dolenz, a thirteen-year-old living in the psychedelic sixties who is absolutely ape over drummer Micky Dolenz of the sensational, made-for-TV band, The Monkees. Ever since the show first aired in 1966—nearly a year ago now—Julie has been crazy about the sparkly-eyed drummer with magnetic personality and fluffy brown curls. And when Julie gets the chance of a lifetime—to meet Micky Dolenz at an exclusive Malibu party—no one on earth is happier than she. It takes one magical evening full of dreams come true for Julie to make a surprising discovery about crushes, first love, and finding romance where she least expects it. Julie’s scheming and dreaming about her favorite celebrity will strike a chord with any girl who has ever pined after a hunky movie star or musician. Her decidedly 1960’s lifestyle will tickle the fancy of those who lived through that colorful decade or merely wished to. Her idol-worship of The Monkees will cause Monkees fans, young and old, to be swept into the whirlwind adventure of Julie’s dream come true. Author Alicia Voss’s own love of The Monkees inspired her to concoct a tantalizing tale sure to be enjoyed by many readers. “Deciding on the title was easy,” she says. “As many may know, there’s an episode of the Brady Bunch entitled ‘Getting Davy Jones’ and featuring the Monkee of the same name. In my opinion, Micky Dolenz, much as he is loved, is an underappreciated talent, not to mention a wonderfully memorable personality! For these reasons, it only made sense to write a story entitled ‘Getting Micky Dolenz!’” Alicia Voss has been an avid follower of the Monkees since she was thirteen—Julie’s age. She has been to Monkees concerts, written endless amounts of fan mail, received personalized autographs from Davy Jones and Peter Tork (she still needs Micky’s and Mike’s!), and has even had the privilege of meeting Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, her two favorite Monkees at a concert she went to for her fifteenth birthday. She is probably the only person in the world who has made their own Monkees paper dolls (complete with an extensive wardrobe of hand-drawn psychedelic clothes), carved Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz jack-o-lanterns, and named a stuffed animal D.W. Washburn (after the Monkees’ song). The death of Davy Jones in February 2012 was admittedly a very difficult time for her, but she plans to keep him alive in her memory always. As for Micky Dolenz, it has long been one of Alicia’s biggest dreams to go to lunch with him. “Who knows?” says the young author. “Maybe someday it will come true! I’d also love it if he read ‘Getting Micky Dolenz’!” Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Short Story Press Presents A Final Kiss By Short Story Press & Alicia Danielle Voss-Guillén o Alicia Danielle Voss-Guillén, author of Price World Publishing’s Tori Series for middle grade readers, as well a previous short story (“One Winter Moment”) for Short Story Press, returns with another poignant tale of the difficulties and dilemmas imposed by impossible loves. o “A Final Kiss” relates the wedding day of Natalie St. John, an educated young woman from a wealthy New England family who must come to terms with the fact that she’s made a life altering mistake. o As an idealistic seventeen-year-old, Natalie meets and falls in love with Joey Renetti, a charming young waiter at a local Italian café. From the very beginning, it is evident to Natalie that the two are a match made in heaven. But Natalie’s uppity parents are far from being in agreement with their daughter. o Natalie’s mother insists that a life with a lower-class restaurant worker is not any kind of a future for a girl of Natalie’s breeding and social standing. She insists that her daughter meet and mingle with other young men. At first, Natalie is defensive of her relationship with Joey and goes to all lengths to protect it, even after she leaves home to attend a prestigious university. o But slowly and steadily time works it wiles, and Natalie’s parents succeed in driving a wedge between their daughter and the young man she truly loves. They are ecstatic when Natalie meets Adam Pennington, a well-to-do businessman and New England socialite who can provide their daughter with the finer things in life. Resigned to a future without Joey, Natalie embarks on a relationship with Adam, and the two soon become engaged. A mere month after Natalie’s graduation from university, the wedding will take place. But as the big day draws close, Natalie finds herself experiencing niggling doubts about Adam, and try as she might, she is unable to put Joey Renetti out of her mind. Even so, she goes through with the ceremony, assuring herself that everything will be all right. After all, Adam is kind, loving, and caring. Natalie has no doubt that he will make a good husband. o But when Natalie unexpectedly runs into Joey Renetti at her wedding reception, all her old longings resurface, and she must confront the reality of the life-changing mistake she made once and must live with for the rest of her days…. o Told through an alternating series of present-day happenings and flashbacks to Natalie’s eighteenth year, A Final Kiss explores the consequences we bring about ourselves when we close our hearts to their inmost desires. o Alicia Voss-Guillén was inspired to write A Final Kiss as she pondered the possibility of such a life-altering regret as Natalie faces in the story. “The concept of a bride meeting up with her one and only true love on the day she is married to a different man was just too good to pass up,” she says. The author infuses her character with the human emotion that she believes would be inherent in a similar scenario, and she hopes that none of her readers will ever have to deal with Natalie St. John Pennington’s level of regret. The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
