This is an updated and revised edition of the autobiography of extraordinary Australian mountaineer Michael Groom which we published in 1997. Even among the many achievement-against-all-setbacks books on the market, Michael Groom's story stands out. In 1987, he lost a third of both his feet to frostbite while climbing one of the world's highest mountains. He was told to forget about an active, outdoor life but by 1990 he had not only taught himself to walk again, he was back climbing the Himalayas. To increase the challenge, Michael climbs without supplementary oxygen, an extraordinary thing to do in the thin oxygen-deprived air at the top of the world. In 1999 Michael climbed Makalu in the Himalayas. Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world and it's generally considered to be a harder climb than Everest, which is why so few people have done it. Michael is now one of the very few people in the world to have climbed all six of the six highest mountains. The book features two stunning 8-page colour photo sections, and has an introduction by respected mountaineer Lincoln Hall. Its appeal will reach far beyond those already interested in mountaineering--it is ideal for anyone with a taste for gripping biography, struggle-against-the-odds stories, inspirational books, or travel in Nepal.

She never imagined the pursuit to parenthood would involve the emotional assault of an adoption agency's flexible morality--but it did. Lauri M. Velotta-Rankin and her husband were sent overseas by an unscrupulous adoption agency to chase the ghosts of children they'd never bring home. After turning to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), a life-threatening diagnosis sent them reeling with fear and to the brink of emotional collapse. Despite an onslaught of crushing blows, a gold thread of compassion was weaved into the fabric of their story. An infinite supply of benevolent refuge was found during an unanticipated two-week stay in the home of a Moroccan grandmother. Though there was no personal history, shared culture, or even common language, an immeasurable bond developed. And when the couple decided to explore domestic adoption, a pregnant teenager's weekly emails restored an emotion that had been ravaged throughout their journey: hope. Triumphing with revitalization, "Sheer Willpower" is an astonishing account of determination fortified by the resilience of maternal spirit.

FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD "In the spirit of Julian Barnes's Flaubert's Parrot and Alain de Botton's How Proust Can Change Your Life, Mr. Dyer's Out of Sheer Rage keeps circling its subject in widening loops and then darting at it when you least expect it . . . a wild book."--Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times Geoff Dyer was a talented young writer, full of energy and reverence for the craft, and determined to write a study of D. H. Lawrence. But he was also thinking about a novel, and about leaving Paris, and maybe moving in with his girlfriend in Rome, or perhaps traveling around for a while. Out of Sheer Rage is Dyer's account of his struggle to write the Lawrence book--a portrait of a man tormented, exhilarated, and exhausted. Dyer travels all over the world, grappling not only with his fascinating subject but with all the glorious distractions and needling anxieties that define the life of a writer.

In the mud and surrounded by snakes and alligators, the city of Houston was born. The umbilical cord that would feed its economic prosperity for the future started along the swamps and would navigate a slow meandering river with an uncertain future. Sheer Will by definition not only describes the change in direction of ships, as ships did to open Texas to global trade. Sheer Will describes those that came before us to bring vision and clarity to an uncertain future. Through efforts of people like George Graham, Nicholas Clopper, Charles Morgan, Thomas Ball, Baldwin Rice, and Jesse Jones, the region and the state have become an irreplaceable economic engine for our nation as the energy capital of the world. David Falloure gives the reader a taste of our rich history of those leaders with clear vision and true grit for big ideas. Our history has been filled, and always will be filled, with the "big" challenges that need big ideas and bold leaders. Those that have preceded us have risen to the challenges that run the gamut from wars to storms with the never ending drone of naysayers, but our history is also filled with people of vision and determination to take on history-bending challenges that left us the busiest port in the United States and the economic legacy we enjoy today. Now as then, the challenges to commerce, create jobs and protect where we live have not changed from those that were faced over one hundred years ago. But Sheer Will provides a glimpse of the grit needed to repeat the success we enjoy today. --Leonard Waterworth. -- Back cover.

When we fail to achieve our goals, procrastination is often the culprit. But how exactly is procrastination to be understood? It has been described as imprudent, irrational, inconsistent, and even immoral, but there has been no sustained philosophical debate concerning the topic. This edited volume starts in on the task of integrating the problem of procrastination into philosophical inquiry. The focus is on exploring procrastination in relation to agency, rationality, and ethics-topics that philosophy is well-suited to address. Theoretically and empirically informed analyses are developed and applied with the aim of shedding light on a vexing practical problem that generates a great deal of frustration, regret, and harm. Some of the key questions that are addressed include the following: How can we analyze procrastination in a way that does justice to both its voluntary and its self-defeating dimensions? What kind of practical failing is procrastination? Is it a form of weakness of will? Is it the product of fragmented agency? Is it a vice? Given the nature of procrastination, what are the most promising coping strategies?
