Excerpt from After Seventy-Five Years Baylor and Texas together have risen to heights planned, dreamed and sacrificed for by the same heroic leaders. Our heroes in war were the same great men who laid the foundation of education in Texas; the same men who secured the first dollar for free schools ever placed in the Texas treasury and gave the first one thousand dollars to Baylor University. Excerpt from Seventy-Five Years on the Border In presenting this little work to the public, I lay no claim to literary merit from a scholarly point of view, as that would be a travesty on the good sense of the higher education of the present time. However, I was born in Central Missouri, and have lived on its western border for seventy-six years, and have seen the things I tell about in my native Missouri way of telling it, and believe it will be as interesting to the many as though it were told in nicely rounded periods of classical English. Be that as it may, I trust that some one of these many stories may strike a responsive chord in the breast of the young, the old, the matron, the maid, the grandfather, the baby boy, to the end that my name shall go down to posterity as having done my part in blazing the way for our grand Civilization. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Seventy-Five Years I was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1826; consequently I have nearly completed my eighty-seventh year. Beverly was a town of considerable importance in the Common wealth. It was, as a part of Salem, one of the earliest of the Colonial settlements, many of its citizens had been engaged in foreign commerce sailing from Salem and Boston as well as from Beverly, and some had taken important parts in the polit ical life of State and nation. The leading citizen of that time, and probably for all time, was Nathan Dane, the author of the Ordinance of 1787 for the government of the Northwestern territory, by which slavery was forever excluded from what now constitutes the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Seldom is it given to man to become the instrument in legislation of such transcendent importance as this which consecrated that vast region forever to Human Freedom. To Dr. Dane also is due the provision in the Constitution prohibiting any State from passing laws impairing the obliga tion of contracts. I remember him very well, an old gentleman with a serene and kindly face. I used to carry to him the N orth American Review and other periodicals for which he and my grandfather, Robert Rantoul, with Dr. Joshua Fisher, were joint subscribers. When I remember my little conversations with one who had been a distinguished member of the Continental Congress it does seem to me a far cry indeed. Excerpt from Berkeley: The First Seventy-Five Years In Many Ways this history of Berkeley is an example of the value of the WPA Writer's Program. It was conceived, planned, compiled, written, and printed in a little over four months. To work within so tight a schedule was not easy: it demanded all the project's resources. For a single author - for even a group of authors beginning at scratch - to plan and execute such an undertaking at such short notice might have been impossible. It was possible for the Northern California Writers' Project only because the project, in the course of other work, had accumulated a great deal of information about Berkeley; because it has, through long and painful experience, learned to systematize its activities so as to accomplish a great deal in a short time; and finally, because it had the enthusiastic support and wholehearted cooperation of the people of Berkeley, including city officials, the university, business and service organizations, women's clubs, and individuals. Despite the speed with which it was compiled, this is not a superficial treatment of the subject; neither, on the other hand, is it as comprehensive a book as a long-time study might have permitted. It was planned and written as a narrative, with the intention of capturing the spirit of Berkeley's growth rather than of listing every detail of the city's history.
