Excerpt from Seventeenth Report to the Legislature of Massachusetts: Relating to the Registry and Return of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth, for the Year Ending December 31, 1858 In compliance with the requirements of law, I have the honor of herewith presenting to the legislature the Annual Report relating to the Registry and Return of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Commonwealth for the year ending December 31, 1858. It constitutes the Seventeenth Annual Report on this subject, and has been prepared with much care and labor. The Tabular Abstracts were made from the certified Returns to this Department, by experienced clerks under the general advice of Dr. E. Strong, who has had several years experience in becoming familiar with such labor. The Observations were written by Dr. Josiah curtis, Of Boston, whose experience in devising the present plan of the Reports, as well as the method pursued in making the Abstracts from the records, and also in writing several ofvi preface.
