Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 of 3 The author cannot fail to recollect with gratitude, the unexpectedly rapid sale of a former volume, and the many favourable acknowledgments he has received from its readers. though repeatedly urged to issue a new edition of that volume, or other fruits of his pen, he has hitherto declined, except occasionally to publish sermons and essays in some, of, the current periodicals. But since his health has failed, and he can no longer stand in the holy place, rather than bear the agony of living to no purpose, he has summoned resolution, with the encourage ment and aid of kind friends, to arrange and issue these three volumes, including some. Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 His sermons were habitually written, and with great care. Their length makes them a curiosity, when viewed by the standard Of modern preaching; and their voluminous divisions and sub divisions give an exhibition of the intelligence and Scriptural instruction of his days exceedingly honorable to the people of his nation and time. Any one of these discourses would be ample for three or four that would be esteemed adequate and enough for a modern assembly. Excerpt from Speeches, Addresses, and Occasional Sermons, Vol. 1 of 3 I have collected in these volumes several Speeches, Addresses and occasional Sermons, which I have delivered at various times during the last seven years. Most of them were prepared for some special emergency: only two papers, that on "The Relation of Jesus to his Age and the Ages," and that on "Immortal Life," were written without reference to some such emergency. All of them have been printed before, excepting the sermon "Of General Taylor," and the address on "The American Scholar;" some have been several times reprinted. I do not know that they are worthy of republication in this permanent form, but the leading ideas of these volumes are very dear to me, and are sure to live as long as the human race shall continue. So I have published a small edition, hoping that the truths which I know are contained in these pages will do a service long after the writer, and the-occasion of their utterance, have passed off and been forgot. I offer them to whom they may concern. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The World's Great Sermons, Vol. 1 of 10 The aim in preparing this work has been to bring together the best examples of the products of the pulpit through the Christian centuries, and to present these masterpieces in attractive and convenient form. It is believed that they will be found valuable as instruction to ministers of to-day. They should also be helpful to others who, tho not preachers, yet seek reading of this kind for the upbuilding of personal character and for strengthening their Christian faith. The sermons have been chosen in some cases for their literary and rhetorical excellences, but in every case for their helpfulness in solving some of the problems of Christian living.
