Excerpt from Sermons on Interesting Subjects, Vol. 1 of 1 Men, destitute of this principle, and who do. Not pretend to act under its influence, may ex bibit remarkable instances Of charity. These, it is not my business at present to trace to their va rions sources, far less, to reprobate the beneficial actions to which they give rise. In asfar as they are useful to society, they merit public praise. I cheerfully Offer my tribute Of grateful acknowledge ment, while I regret their want Of that noblest and most operative principle, which would render them completely amiable and praise-worthy. Ifi' while strangers to its influence, they do SO much good, what would they not do, how much more extensively useful would they not be, were love to God, and his son, the ruling passion in their minds? Without derogating from their liberality, permit me to say, that in their state of alienation from the life and love Of God, we can have little dependance on their continuing or abounding in that sort of goodness. Nay, their circumstances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 The Sermons of the Reverend Robert Walker have long and justly enjoyed a large portion of Public approbation. Those which were published in the Author's lifetime acquired a rapid reputation. The Sermons which were added after his death, though deficient perhaps in the last polish of an intended publication, did not detract from his well-earned fame; and the whole Work has steadily maintained the respect which it at first acquired. The present Edition, in three Volumes, contains all the Sermons of Mr. Walker, which have appeared, either during his life or after his death - as well those which were published separately as those which were collected in volumes. Though there were neither striking incidents, nor much variety, in the life of the Author, the following facts will not be unacceptable to his friends. He was born in Canongate, where his father was minister, in 1716. He received a regular education at the University of Edinburgh. Happening to reside for a few months in 1737 with a clergyman in Galloway, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Presbytery of Kircudbright. In 1738, in consequence of an unanimous call, he was ordained minister of Straiton, within the bounds of the Presbytery of Ayr. He always mentioned this situation with particular satisfaction, and considered the years which he spent at Straiton as among the happiest years of his life. In 1746 he was translated to the Second Charge of South Leith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 His sermons were habitually written, and with great care. Their length makes them a curiosity, when viewed by the standard Of modern preaching; and their voluminous divisions and sub divisions give an exhibition of the intelligence and Scriptural instruction of his days exceedingly honorable to the people of his nation and time. Any one of these discourses would be ample for three or four that would be esteemed adequate and enough for a modern assembly. Excerpt from Sermons on Several Subjects, Vol. 1 The Love Of God, so forcibly inculcated in this and other scripture, is sentiment purely evangelical; and is one of those peculiar circumstances which so eminently distinguish the doctrines of the Gospel from the dry unanimated precepts of the ancient heathen moralists. We never hear them urging the love of God, as a necessary part of human duty, or as a proper ground of moral obligation. Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects and Occasions, Vol. 1 The Sermons here Offered to the Public, have been Written at various intervals and on various occasions, ln3 the course Of the last twelve years. In order that there might be as much coherence between them as possible, and that they might not seem to stand altogether detached from each other, I endeavoured to arrange them in strings according to the several subjects of which they treat. Thefirst volume contains one of such strings: and, in each of them, the drift Of the author's argument would appear to the best ad vantage, if the Sermons should be read exactly in the order of their collocation. Excerpt from Notable Sermons, Vol. 1 Come, brethren, let's practise the heavenly man ners. Let's rehearse the anthems of the redeemed! Let us prove ourselves whether we have passed from death unto life by ascertaining that we do love and live for each other. And while the air is full of portents heralding dis tress of nations; while in our own restless land con tentions are ripening into hate, and society curdling into classes, let us come together, - not to celebrate sacraments and be frozen with fear in presence of mystic acts and stately ceremonies, - but to know and to care for one another, to shield one another, to rejoice together, and together weep.
