Excerpt from Sermons, and Lectures on Moral and Historical Subjects The discourses contained in the present volume comprise the most important and beautiful of the Sermons delivered in the United States by the Very Rev. Thomas N. Burke, O.P., as well as of his Lectures on moral and historical subjects, - all of which possess an interest for the Irish-American element of the community, not only as magnificent and praiseworthy efforts of one of the most gifted living orators of their race, but also on account of the testimony which they bear to the fidelity to faith, religious fervor, and national virtue exhibited by the Irish people in every vicissitude of fortune. As specimens of pulpit oratory, nothing can be imagined finer or more impressive than those discourses; while the enlightened spirit, and broad, comprehensive views characterizing the Lectures, - in which the great wants and deficiencies of society, in the present day, are analyzed with the acumen of a mastermind and the learning of a true Christian philosopher, - render them doubly valuable, even from a purely humanitarian point of view. The secret of Father Burke's influence over his auditors, (and, indeed, over his readers, also, ) lies not so much in his eloquence - great as are his natural gifts in that particular - as in the convincing force of his sincerity, and the intensity of his zeal for the enlightenment, elevation, and sanctification of all his fellow creatures. On this point, one of the most eminent and well-known of American Catholic writers has said of the great Irish Dominican: - Father Thomas Burke is known all over Europe, as a great apostolic preacher. It is especially in Rome, where most of his life has been passed, that his reputation is so great. Wherever he goes, after he has preached once, the faithful flock around the pulpit and around the church, if he preaches a second time, as bees gather round a bed of jessamines. What is the power by which he holds, hushed and breathless, each one in a crowded congregation; alike the most learned and critical, and the rough men with little either of sentiment or education? A natural gift of oratory no one can mistake in him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons on Moral Subjects Love not the world, nor those things which are in the world. What is it, my brethren, that is so Often pointed at and condemned in the Gospel, under the name Of the world? Our Divine Redeemer informs His apostles, that the Spirit Of Truth, whom He would send down upon them, could not be known by the world; (john, xiv. 17) that the peace which He bestowed upon them was not that which it bestowed. He forewarns them that the world would hate them as it had first hated Him, (xv. 18) and the prophets before them; (xvii. 14) that it had not even known His eternal Father: (25) and He couse quently excludes it from the pathetic prayer which He makes for His apostles. They, in their turn, were no less careful to caution their followers against the same opposition between their doctrine and the world. St. Paul makes them reflect that it is not the spirit of the world which they have received in Christianity, (1 Cor. Ii. 12) that its wisdom is only folly in the eyes Of God; (iii. 19) and that his great study was to crucify. Excerpt from Lectures to Young Men: On Various Important Subjects Trans volume is the eldest-born of my books. It dates from 1844, and originally contained only the first seven Lectures. The Lectures were delivered on successive Sunday nights; the church was crowded during the series, - a thing that sel dom happened during my Western life. Indianapolis in 1844 contained about four thousand inhabitants, * and had not less than twelve churches of eight different denominations. The audiences of the Second Presbyterian Church, of which I was pastor, did not average five hundred in number during the eight years of my settlement. But five hundred was regarded as a large audience. The Lectures were written, each one during the week preced ing the day of its delivery. I well remember the enjoyment which I had in their preparation. They were children of early enthusiasm. I can see before me now, as plainly as then, the room which in our little ten-foot home served at once as parlor, study, and bedroom; and the writing-chair, the place by the window, and the skeleton bookcase, with a few books scattered on solitary shelves, like a handful of people in church on a rainy day. Excerpt from Lectures, Essays, and Sermons Is not this a strange world that runs thoughtlessly on through all this living, speaking loveliness, which seems to point every moment toward the God whose hand is form ing and fashioning all before all eyes? How few there are who seem to have any but a theoretical belief that there is something at work around us besides the trees, the flowers, the clouds, and the sun! We see them at work, and ask no further; ask not who makes them work, who gives them all their loveliness and liberty and life. What should we do but fall down and adore before this visible creation of an invisible and all-pervading Being? Excerpt from Sermons and Moral Discourses: For All the Sundays and Principal Festivals of the Year, on the Most Important Truths and Maxims of the Gospel Then they shall see the Son of Man coming in a cloud, with great Power and Majesty - Luke, c. Xxi. V. 27. This being the first Sunday of Advent, the Church, in order to inspire her children with that penitential Spirit which is suitable to this holy time, displays one of the most terrifying truths of the Christian Religion, and proposes on this day to our serious consideration the tre mendons mystery of the last and general judgment, which is to decide whether we are to be the happiest or most unhappy creatures that God can make us; whether heaven, with all its infinite joys, or hell, with all its inconceivable torments, is to be our everlasting inheritance whether we are for ever to Sing joyful Alleluias with the blessed choirs of angels and saints above, or to burn eternally in flames of fire, with legions of merciless devils below. The condemnation of the rich glutton who was buried in hell at the time of his death, as the Gospel informs us, and the happy end of poor Lazarus, who was immediately translated into Abraham's bosom when he departed this life, plainly shew that the soul undergoes a particular judgment, the very instant that death separates it from the body. But besides this particular judgment, there is a'day of general judgment, appointed by God, for all mankind to appear together before the awful tribunal Of Jesus Christ.
