During the Second World War, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) suffered one of its greatest defeats in Burma. Both in Malaya and Burma, the bulk of the British Commonwealth forces comprised Indian units. Few people know that by 1944, about 70 percent of the Allied ground personnel in Burma was composed of soldiers of the Indian Army. The Indian Army comprised British-led Indian units, British officered units of the Indian princely states and the British units attached to the Government of India. Based on the archival materials collected from India and the United Kingdom, Sepoys against the Rising Sun assesses the combat/military/battlefield effectiveness of the Indian Army against the IJA during World War II. The volume is focussed on the tactical innovations and organizational adaptations which enabled the sepoys to overcome the Japanese in the trying terrain of Burma.

To many Indians, it was their First War of Independence. To the British, it was a military mutiny. Either way, neither country would be the same by the time it was over. In 1857, the soldiers (sepoys) belonging to the army of the British East India Company were issued new rifles. To load them, the soldiers had to bite off the tops of paper cartridges, which the men thought were greased with either pig fat or beef tallow. These substances were anathema to the Muslim and Hindu soldiers, and they refused. This was the spark that set off a rebellion that spread throughout much of the army and eventually the civilian population. Before it ended, thousands of British troops and hundreds of thousands of Indians lay dead. "William Henry Fitchett brings this incredible chapter in British military history alive as only he can in this amazingly readable volume."

Excerpt from The Sepoy Revolt: Its Causes Its Consequences Were my book to be written over again, I should like to deepen the colours in which some pictures of Indian life have been painted but the experience which enables a man to write on the subject of Eastern government, tends to blunt his sympathies, and in some degree to injure his moral sense. Torture and lawlessness, and the perpetual suffering of millions, are so familiar to me, that I am conscious of not feeling as I ought to do when wrong is done to individuals and nations. The man who lives in the vicinity of the undertaker and boiler-maker, is not likely to join in the agitation against barrel-organs and street cries.
