Designated a Doody's Core Title! While the scope of long-term care settings has expanded from nursing homes and home care agencies to assisted living facilities and community-based health services, the training for nurses, managers and administrators, medical directors, and other professionals who work in these facilities is often fragmented. This book was developed to fill a widely-recognized gap in the management and leadership skills of RNs needed to improve the quality of long-term care. The book is based around learning modules in leadership and management competencies that were site-tested in three types of long-term care settings and revised based on the resulting feedback. Several of the nurse experts involved in the project contribute to this book. The leadership modules cover team building, communication, power and negotiation, change theory and process, management direction and design, and management that moves from conflict to collaboration. Two additional modules cover cultural competence and principles of teaching and learning related to adult education in the long-term care environment. Together, these skills will enhance the nurse's ability to build and interact with the geriatric care team, resolve conflict, negotiate for solutions, develop collaboration, and teach and mentor nurses and nursing assistants.

Achievement assessment has undergone a major shift, from what some call a `culture of testing' to a `culture of assessment'. Nowadays, a strong emphasis is placed on the integration of assessment and instruction, on assessing processes rather than just products, and on evaluating individual progress relative to each student's starting point. This book addresses assessment issues in light of the present state of affairs. The first part discusses new alternatives in the assessment of achievement in various subject areas, focusing on agenda, practice, impact and evaluation of the assessment. The second part deals with issues related to assessment of the learning process, specifically: questions concerning the assessment of individual differences in prior knowledge, learning skills and strategies.

Older People and Community Care sets social and health care practice with older people firmly in the context of the new community care arrangements and the consequent organizational trends towards a market culture. However, it also questions the relative lack of attention given by professionals to issues of structural inequality in old age, compared for example to race and gender. Thus, the book tackles a double agenda: * How can community care practice be suffused with anti-ageist values and principles? Addressing this question the book sets out the foundation knowledge and values which must underpin the development of anti-discriminatory community care practice and examines the implications for practitioners in terms of the essential skills and inherent dilemmas which arise. Older People and Community Care is essential reading for all those working with and managing services to older people, and who aspire to make empowerment for older people a reality.

This collection demonstrates how feminist pedagogy can be implemented in a variety of institutional and disciplinary settings. Unlike most of the current literature, it provides a vast array of examples of feminist pedagogy in action. It suggests practical ways of creating classroom environments open to feminist and anti-racist teaching, way feminists at universities can intervene in community programs and how to apply feminist pedagogy to new challenges such as distance education, cyberspace, fiscal constraints, and the changing political climate. Meeting the Challenge also looks to other nations for examples of how to successfully implement feminist pedagogy.
