Contrary to monographs on non-linear optics this book concentrates on problems of self-organization in various important contexts. The reader learns how patterns in non-linear optical systems are created and what theoretical methods can be applied to describe them. Next, various aspects of pattern formation such as associative memory, information processing, spatio-temporal instability, photo refraction, and so on are treated. The book addresses graduate students and researchers in physics and optical engineering.

While the present edition is bibliographically the third one of Vol. 8 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences (IS 8), the book actually stems from Vol. 17 of the series Communication and Cybernetics (CC 17), entitled Associative Memory - A System-Theoretical Approach, which appeared in 1977. That book was the first monograph on distributed associative memories, or "content-addressable memories" as they are frequently called, especially in neural-networks research. This author, however, would like to reserve the term "content-addressable memory" for certain more traditional constructs, the memory locations of which are selected by parallel search. Such devices are discussed in Vol. 1 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences, Content-Addressable Memories. This third edition of IS 8 is rather similar to the second one. Two new discussions have been added: one to the end of Chap. 5, and the other (the L VQ 2 algorithm) to the end of Chap. 7. Moreover, the convergence proof in Sect. 5.7.2 has been revised.

This symposium brings together the research from different disciplines of process control, and discusses the problems encountered in the application of automation systems. The papers in this volume analyze the results of theoretical research and how far applications have been developed, new design methodologies and technologies, to give a comprehensive overview of the state of the art of this fast-developing science.

"Advances in intelligent Control" is a collection of essays covering the latest research in the field. Based on a special issue of "The International Journal of Control", the book is arranged in two parts. Part one contains recent contributions of artificial neural networks to modelling and control. Part two concerns itself primarily with aspects of fuzzy logic in intelligent control, guidance and estimation, although some of the contributions either make direct equivalence relationships to neural networks or use hybrid methods where a neural network is used to develop the fuzzy rule base.

The self-organizing map, first described by the Finnish scientist Teuvo Kohonen, can by applied to a wide range of fields. This book is about such applications, i.e. how the original self-organizing map as well as variants and extensions of it can be applied in different fields. In fourteen chapters, a wide range of such applications is discussed. To name a few, these applications include the analysis of financial stability, the fault diagnosis of plants, the creation of well-composed heterogeneous teams and the application of the self-organizing map to the atmospheric sciences.

The material presented in this book addresses the analysis and design of learning control systems. It begins with an introduction to the concept of learning control, including a comprehensive literature review. The text follows with a complete and unifying analysis of the learning control problem for linear LTI systems using a system-theoretic approach which offers insight into the nature of the solution of the learning control problem. Additionally, several design methods are given for LTI learning control, incorporating a technique based on parameter estimation and a one-step learning control algorithm for finite-horizon problems. Further chapters focus upon learning control for deterministic nonlinear systems, and a time-varying learning controller is presented which can be applied to a class of nonlinear systems, including the models of typical robotic manipulators. The book concludes with the application of artificial neural networks to the learning control problem. Three specific ways to neural nets for this purpose are discussed, including two methods which use backpropagation training and reinforcement learning. The appendices in the book are particularly useful because they serve as a tutorial on artificial neural networks.

Artificial Intelligence in the Age of Neural Networks and Brain Computing, Second Edition demonstrates that present disruptive implications and applications of AI is a development of the unique attributes of neural networks, mainly machine learning, distributed architectures, massive parallel processing, black-box inference, intrinsic nonlinearity, and smart autonomous search engines. The book covers the major basic ideas of "brain-like computing" behind AI, provides a framework to deep learning, and launches novel and intriguing paradigms as possible future alternatives. The present success of AI-based commercial products proposed by top industry leaders, such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Intel, and Amazon, can be interpreted using the perspective presented in this book by viewing the co-existence of a successful synergism among what is referred to as computational intelligence, natural intelligence, brain computing, and neural engineering. The new edition has been updated to include major new advances in the field, including many new chapters. - Developed from the 30th anniversary of the International Neural Network Society (INNS) and the 2017 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN - Authored by top experts, global field pioneers, and researchers working on cutting-edge applications in signal processing, speech recognition, games, adaptive control and decision-making - Edited by high-level academics and researchers in intelligent systems and neural networks - Includes all new chapters, including topics such as Frontiers in Recurrent Neural Network Research; Big Science, Team Science, Open Science for Neuroscience; A Model-Based Approach for Bridging Scales of Cortical Activity; A Cognitive Architecture for Object Recognition in Video; How Brain Architecture Leads to Abstract Thought; Deep Learning-Based Speech Separation and Advances in AI, Neural Networks
