This book considers a broad range of areas from decision making methods applied in the contexts of Risk, Reliability and Maintenance (RRM). Intended primarily as an update of the 2015 book Multicriteria and Multiobjective Models for Risk, Reliability and Maintenance Decision Analysis, this edited work provides an integration of applied probability and decision making. Within applied probability, it primarily includes decision analysis and reliability theory, amongst other topics closely related to risk analysis and maintenance. In decision making, it includes multicriteria decision making/aiding (MCDM/A) methods and optimization models. Within MCDM, in addition to decision analysis, some of the topics related to mathematical programming areas are considered, such as multiobjective linear programming, multiobjective nonlinear programming, game theory and negotiations, and multiobjective optimization. Methods related to these topics have been applied to the context of RRM. In MCDA, several other methods are considered, such as outranking methods, rough sets and constructive approaches. The book addresses an innovative treatment of decision making in RRM, improving the integration of fundamental concepts from both areas of RRM and decision making. This is accomplished by presenting current research developments in decision making on RRM. Selective maintenance problem plays an essential role in reliability optimization decision-making problems. Systems are a configuration of several components, and there are situations the system needs small intervals or break for maintenance actions, during the intervals expert carried out the maintenance actions to replace or repair the deteriorated components of the systems. Because of the uncertainty associated with the component’s operational time, failure, and next mission duration create a new challenge in determining optimal components allocation and evaluating future missions successfully. In this paper, a multi-objective selective maintenance allocation problem is formulated with fuzzy parameters under neutrosophic environment. A new defuzzification technique is introduced based on beta distribution to convert fuzzy parameters into crisp values. The neutrosophic goal programming technique is used to determine the compromise allocation of replaceable and repairable components based on the system reliability optimization. A numerical illustration is used to validate the model and ascertain its effectiveness. The result is compared with two other approaches and found to be better. The method is flexible and straightforward and can be solved using any available commercial packages. The extension of the concept can be useful to other complex system reliability optimization.

Contingencies are unexpected crises or events that cause a major threat to the safety, security and well-being of a certain population. This research effort builds upon the work on contingency logistics reliability models by Miman (2008) who extended the preliminary work conducted by Thomas (2004) that provides the modeling approach which takes a mission success orientation and focuses on the ability to recover from or prevent a contingency logistics failure. Miman (2008) proposes the sustainability model of a contingency logistics network using the concept of selective maintenance. This problem, once formulated, is a non-convex, non-linear, non-separable, multi-dimensional, discrete knapsack problem. These problems are known to be NP hard. Therefore, one needs to explore heuristic solutions in search of robust and effective solution approaches. He developed a memetic algorithm, GAFTS, and proposed this for identifying the best set of maintenance actions to sustain the contingency logistics network. Besides, he used Physical Programming, a multi criteria optimization procedure, to exploit a network manager’s preference toward the numerous criteria (reliability, cost, time, resource utilization etc...) judiciously. This research effort continues the exploration of heuristic techniques for the sustainability model developed by Miman (2008) and develops a hybrid heuristics technique, EDGASA, incooperating simulating annealing (SA) procedure with genetic algorithm (GA). Comparisons of EDGASA with GA and SA reveal that it outperforms in terms of average reliability, best reliability and worst reliability found at an expense of increased solution time. One of the contributions of this study is a multi-objective modeling approach developed based on utopia distance that aims at minimizing the weighted distance between a solution to the ideal point that could be achieved. The study fills some of the voids in the contingency logistics networks’ solution and modeling and highlights potential studies by applying the hybrid heuristic developed as well as multiobjective modeling approach proposed to other problems.

Most books on reliability theory are devoted to traditional binary reliability models allowing for only two possible states for a system and its components: perfect functionality and complete failure. However, many real-world systems are composed of multi-state components, which have different performance levels and several failure modes with various effects on the entire system performance (degradation). Such systems are called Multi-State Systems (MSS). The examples of MSS are power systems where the component performance is characterized by the generating capacity, computer systems where the component performance is characterized by the data processing speed, communication systems, etc.This book is the first to be devoted to Multi-State System (MSS) reliability analysis and optimization. It provides a historical overview of the field, presents basic concepts of MSS, defines MSS reliability measures, and systematically describes the tools for MSS reliability assessment and optimization. Basic methods for MSS reliability assessment, such as a Boolean methods extension, basic random process methods (both Markov and semi-Markov) and universal generating function models, are systematically studied.
