One of the most prolific applied mathematicians of the mid-twentieth century, Prof Lin is a highly respected professor at MIT. These volumes, a collection of Prof Lin's papers from 1943 to 1986, is an attempt to exhibit a historical perception of the development of ideas in the following areas of research:Stability of Parallel FlowsTurbulenceSpiral Structure of GalaxiesProf Lin has written short comments and personal recollections on the development of thinking in these subjects. In addition to research papers, there are two essays dealing with the basic thinking that underlies the development of applied mathematics as an academic discipline in USA. Other topics of interest are Aerodynamics, Liquid Helium, Solid State Physics, Plasticity and Magnetohydrodynamics. About 51 papers are included in these two volumes.

The volume represents a lifetime's work of the author, for many years the Stephen P Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor of Fluid Mechanics of the University of Michigan. The papers selected treat the dynamics of stratified or rotating fluids, internal or surface waves, hydrodynamic stability, jets and plumes, flow in porous media, and certain aspects of hydrodynamics in magnetic or electric fields. When the papers are viewed in perspective, heterogeneity, whether in density, entropy, circulation, viscosity, or in some quantity which can be called magnetic circulation, seems to be a recurring theme in the phenomena investigated. It provides a general framework through which the understanding of the various phenomena is facilitated by the satisfying similarity underlying their seeming diversity.

From the reviews: "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969 and it has already become one of the fundemental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and neighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. ...The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world." Space Science Review# "Dividing the whole field plus related subjects into 108 categories, each work is numbered and most are accompanied by brief abstracts. Fairly comprehensive cross-referencing links relevant papers to more than one category, and exhaustive author and subject indices are to be found at the back, making the catalogues easy to use. The series appears to be so complete in its coverage and always less than a year out of date that I shall certainly have to make a little more space on those shelves for future volumes." In these selections readers are treated to a rare opportunity to see the world through the eyes of one of the twentieth century's most brilliant and sensitive scientists. Conceived by Chandrasekhar as a supplement to his Selected Papers, this volume begins with eight papers he wrote with Valeria Ferrari on the non-radial oscillations of stars. It then explores some of the themes addressed in Truth and Beauty, with meditations on the aesthetics of science and the world it examines. Highlights include: "The Series Paintings of Claude Monet and the Landscape of General Relativity," "The Perception of Beauty and the Pursuit of Science," "On Reading Newton's Principia at Age Past Eighty," and personal recollections of Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others. Selected Papers, Volume 7 paints a picture of Chandra's universe, filled with stars and galaxies, but with space for poetics, paintings, and politics. The late S. Chandrasekhar was best known for his discovery of the upper limit to the mass of a white dwarf star, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983. He was the author of many books, including The Mathematical Theory of Black Holes and, most recently, Newton's Principia for the Common Reader.

This new volume presents a selection of state-of-the-art technological advancements in IoT, network technologies, and software engineering that address unsolved issues in computational intelligence. The volume focuses on empirical, theoretical, and application perspectives on smart technologies and computational intelligence, identifying the advantages and limitations of each. The chapters on smart technologies address their application in communication services, healthcare and assistive technology, urban waste management, vehicle pollution and accident detection, and more. The technologies encompass the use of machine learning, blockchain, fog computing, etc. The volume goes on to discuss computational intelligence in network technologies as well as cryptography mechanisms, internet privacy protection, satellite communication technology, ant colony optimization algorithms, etc. The topics on computational intelligence in software engineering include security optimization via software-defined networking, education-based interactive automated agent, data warehouse requirement engineering, and more. Together with Volume 1: Data Science and AI, Selected Papers from CIAIS-2021, this 2-volume set offers and abundance of valuable information on emerging technologies in computational intelligence.

“[A]n autobiography that, happily, is an engrossing, full-bodied reflection of the man, a neatly balanced combination of technical insights and always pertinent, often irreverent anecdotes... an upbeat tale of a man who had a great love of life and a well-merited sense of achievement, told with genuine gusto and fascinating detail.” — Richard Witkin, The New York Times “It is the triumph of this book that it manages to combine a chatty, anecdotal, and highly readable tale of a distinguished scientist’s everyday life with a substantial number of penetrating insights into the creative process.” — I. B. Holley, Jr., Science “The present biography is eminently readable, sometimes puckish, and von Karman himself is rather inspiring in his faith in science.” — Kirkus “Every paragraph grips the reader’s attention... a book almost impossible to put down until it is read.” — Aerospace Historian “This account of von Kármán’s life and his contributions to the science of aerodynamics is most fascinating reading.” — The Science Teacher “Every page of this superb classic is infused with von Karman’s humanity. As his narrative makes clear, he was not simply a clever technician but a man of character whose vision advanced the aerospace sciences and fostered international cooperation.” — Aviation History
