Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of War, 1874, Vol. 1: Being Part of the Message and Documents Communicated to the Two Houses of Congress at the Beginning of the Second Session of the Forty-Third Congress During the summer of 1873 yellow fever appeared as an epidemic at various cities in the Southern States, assuming at some points a most malignant type, and proving exceedingly fatal, as for example at Mem phis, Tenn., and at Shreveport, La. That it did not prevail to a greater extent in the Army must be regarded as being due to the hygienic precautions adopted, and especially to the prompt removal of the troops from those posts at which the disease was introduced from infected local ities, or at which its introduction appeared to be imminent. The data for the descriptive anatomical catalogue have been perfected. The publication of this work, recommended by the Secretary of War and by the House of Representatives, was not acted upon by the Senate. The materials are so arranged that the work can be speedily completed when authority to print is granted, and I would respectfully renew the recommendation made in my previous annual reports, that authority be given to publish one thousand copies of the work. Legislation is necessary to authorize the Congressional Printer to publish an additional edition of complete copies of the Medical and Surgical History of the War, and this I recommend. Excerpt from Secretary's Report, Vol. 1: July, 1882 I have the honor to present to you my first report as your Secretary. In the preparation of it I have followed quite closely the reports of the last two years, making but one change of any importance. The first list of the class on pages 5, ct seq. Has formerly contained the names of those who were regular members of the class during Senior year. Formerly no list has been given of those who received degrees. In this report the first list is of those who received degrees. To this fact the double column entitled Class of 1882 in the statistics (probable occu pation, etc.) is due. The first half of this column gives the statistics of those who were regular members of the class during the Senior year, the second the statistics of those who received degrees. Thus our class may be compared with preceding classes and also the statistics of our class, as composed of those who received degrees, may be examined. I imagine that eventually the statistics of graduating classes given by secretaries will be of those graduating, and with this idea in mind I have made the change. At any rate it seems to me that the report ought to contain a list of those who graduate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. That is a little too juvenile even for a Class Report. He would not protest much if his name was ap pended. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers to the Secretary of War for the Year 1874, Vol. 1 of 2 Under the Chief of Engineers the works for the defense of the coast have been prosecuted with vigor and as rapidly as the appropriations in hand would permit, and in several of our important harbors some of the larger works are approaching completion. Generally, the works are modifications of existing defenses, constructed for less powerful arma ments than those now used. The rapid advances that have been made in power of modern ordnance, render it essential that these works should be pushed forward to completion and properly armed.
