Speech and Language: Volume 2, Advances in Basic Research and Practice is a compendium of papers that discusses the processes and pathologies of speech and language, such as functional articulation disorders, lexical development, and a group therapy for treating stuttering. Some papers deal with vocal fold vibrations, childhood homonymy, framework for conversational speech behaviors, and vibrotactile testing. One paper cites studies of Hersen and Barlow (1976) that treatments warrant consideration only if these are powerful enough to effect obvious gains; and of Gilbert, McPeek, and Mosteller (1977) that treatment research is more likely to give modest than substantial gains—the degree of gains which can also be difficult to detect. Another paper examines suggestions for teaching words to language-disordered children, that when knowledge of normal language processes is applied in training approaches, effective and individualized programs will follow. Used in the treatment of stuttering, the Shaping Group, which employs action and many other treatment models, shows that its approach is effective. Another paper notes that before a surgical correction of voice disorders is undertaken, the importance of knowing the possible effects of various procedures on the voice should first be known. The compendium is well suited for linguists, ethnologists, psychologists, speech therapists, and researchers whose works involve linguistics, learning, communications, corrective surgery, and syntax.

Craniomandibular Muscles

Craniomandibular Muscles
Author: Arthur J. Miller
Publisher: CRC Press
Total Pages: 408
Release: 2017-09-08
Genre: Medical
ISBN: 1351367188

This book provides a comprehensive scientific investigation into every aspect of craniomandibular muscle function in both human and experimental animal studies. Topics discussed cover three broad areas: the anatomical, physiological, and histochemical aspects of these muscles; the special importance of these muscles to resting mandibular posture and mastication; and their role in clinically relevant problems involved with occlusion, craniomandibular disorders, and the growth and development of the cranioskeleton. Over 150 figures and tables are used to illustrate the concepts in these three areas. Methods for studying craniomandibular muscles are examined in depth, and the use of classically defined techniques such as electromyography and newer approaches using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and immunological identification of contractile proteins are discussed. Specialists in oral biology, orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and craniomandibular disorders in schools and in private practice should consider this book an indispensable resource for their work and studies.

The Neural Basis of Oral and Facial Function

The Neural Basis of Oral and Facial Function

This book is a result of our combined major interests in oral and facial function. Since most of our research efforts have been concentrated on fundamental neural mechanisms, the book emphasizes basic research in this area. However, our back grounds in clinical dentistry have always made us acutely aware of the relevance of these findings to clinical problems in dentistry and medicine, and such correlations are emphasized throughout the text. The term, "oral and facial function," will here include the sensory and motor neural mechanisms of the face, mouth, pharynx, and larynx. Detailed discussions of nasal function, olfaction, and speech mechanisms have been omitted; these areas would encompass a book in themselves. A chapter on the subject of taste presents a brief overview in relation to other chapters in the book and clinical significance. We have not intended each chapter to be a review of the literature in a given area but have chosen to emphasize significant findings for total function of the area. References are limited to review articles whenever possible and the reader is invited to search such reviews for original articles of interest. Where such reviews are not available, original articles are usually referenced so that the book provides a path to source material for those so inclined. Some of the chapters on special areas of interest such as teeth, periodontium, and jaw reflexes, however, are extensively referenced because of their unique relationship to the subject matter of the book.

Symposium on Development of Upper Respiratory Anatomy and Function

Symposium on Development of Upper Respiratory Anatomy and Function

This Symposium resulted from a linkage of interests of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute of Dental Research, and the Fogarty International Center. The Perinatal Biology and Infant Mortality Program of the NICHD sponsors investigations of pregnancy, maternal health, intrauterine growth and infant development. A major role is in the instigation and the support of research pertinent to the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The NIDR Section on Oral and Pharyngeal Development studies the infant performances of feeding, vocalization, and positioning, relating these to changes in local sensory resources. The FIC, through its Conference and Seminar Program, furthers international research pertinent to medicine. This conference of developmental anatomists and physiologists with clinicians concerned with the developmentally calendared entity of SIDS resulted in a productive and provocative exchange. We learned from each other and with each other. This volume is composed of chapters which were prepared after the conference, based in varying degree on the typescript of the spoken presentations. The questions and comments of the discussions were edited by the contributors and the responses by the chapter authors.
