The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre is a delightful, deceptively simple setting in the form of a lullaby for mixed choir and accompaniment of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The White Seal'. This full SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) choral arrangement with Piano accompaniment is accurately transcribed and appears in great quality print, with easy part writing throughout, so that singing this emotive song is as easy as possible. When Eric Whitacre was commissioned to write music for an animated feature, he was so struck by the words of Kipling's lovely poem that he immediately sat down to write a calm and subtle yet musically interesting piece. Unfortunately, the song was not used, but was later commissioned by the Towne Singers, and we are pleased to offer you this Seal Lullaby sheet music.

Playful and inquisitive, seals have long been interested in humans—and humans have reciprocated that interest, falling for their beauty, grace, and charm as they frolic alongside our boats or loll on sandy shores. In this newest entry in the Animal series, Victoria Dickenson traces the history of our interaction with these beautiful, fascinating swimmers, from the centuries of hunting—in which people killed countless seals for their skin, oil, and meat—to the present, when the white-furred baby seal has become one of the most potent symbols of the need for ecological conservation. Along the way, she offers an approachable account of seal biology and behavior, and she delineates the threats they face from habitat destruction and climate change. Beautifully illustrated and packed with stories from folklore, myth, and history, Seal offers a richly immersive view of a much-loved, storied creature.

This book is a study of the social and cultural change in Ming China's lower Yangzi delta region from about 1500 to 1644. It takes three social groups—literati, scholarofficials and merchants—as the framework for discussing the political, socioeconomic and cultural forces that coalesced and reinforced one another to influence and facilitate the region’s change. A still wider perspective reveals how the region’s political ties with the state and commercial links with external markets impacted the region for better and for worse. The book also discusses the literati's reflection and discourse, which their participation in the change generated, on the issues of morality, money, politics and disorder. The reader, when brought into the richly textured social and cultural life of Ming China's heartland, will foster an appreciation of what it was like for the region and its people to live in an age of commercial and cultural vigor, which then descended into distress and despair. For scholars and for others conversant with Chinese history, and Ming history in particular, the extensive use of literati sources and the references to contemporary scholarship will be of interest.
