A British staff officer and armored vehicle commander vividly recounts his experience on the frontlines of the Falklands War. In May 1982, Captain Roger Field of the Blues and Royals, attached to HQ Fifth Infantry Brigade, sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 2 as part of the second wave to liberate the Falkland Islands. His journey took him to Fitzroy in time to witness the Argentineans bomb the landing ships Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram. Later, a chance meeting led to him joining the Commanding Officer of 2 Para for the Battle of Wireless Ridge. When the Paras lost a Scimitar commander, Roger took command of the armored vehicle and fought the rest of the battle from the turret. The next day, his Scimitar was the tip of the spear as 2 Para and The Blues and Royals led the victorious charge into Port Stanley.

Excerpt from The Stanley Tales, Vol. 4 of 6: Original and Select Whose faults would have been very few if his Christian neighbours had judged as mercifully as the recording angel of Mahomet, who is said to register no errors committed when a Turk is intoxicated, in a passion, or not arrived at years of discretion. Though he had now lived half a century, he was very far from those years, having a high respect for drinking, as 'a part of old English hospitality; and for fits of passion, because as he said, a hail-storm is better than a fog. The churlish puritans of those days saw 'nothing to alarm them in the eccentricities of an old cavalier, whose attachment to the ancient order of things shewed itself chiefly in a superstitious fondness for-haif-forgotten ceremonies. He kept a falconer, a bufi'oon, and a decrepit Welsh musician, who understood all the songs of his ancestor Thaliessin, and especially his custom o. Excerpt from Personal Memoirs of Major-General D. S. Stanley, U. S. A In riding over the State of Ohio today, one is struck with the beauty of the farms and the perfect condition of the land, - mellow soil in well levelled field; not a root or a stump to arrest the easy progress of the plow. It was not always so. The first cultivation was done amid stumps, roots and huge deadened trees. The land was very thoroughly grubbed where the plow could run ten feet without meeting stump or root. The plowman was jerked about by the handles of the plow until his motions resembled those of a rope dancer. One could not decide which most needed pity, the soreness of the plowboy or the necks of the wretched horses and oxen. The latter were mostly used for new land as their gait suited better the handling of the plow amongst the roots.
