Excerpt from Schools at Home and Abroad These essays and addresses on educational topics have been prepared at various times, and for varying audiences. Several of them were prepared for gatherings of. Primary teachers, others for gatherings of parents and persons interested in education. Some repetition and apparent diversity seem almost inevitable in a collection of essays written under these circumstances. Yet the writer thinks that, beneath this repetition and diversity, the essential unity of attitude, so to speak, is preserved. There will be noticed too in the text local references, but the reader will see that the argument demands such local point, and he will be able to vary the reference to suit the environment. The purpose of the writer is not an ambitious one. He makes no claim to originality in any respect. His aim throughout has been to make available to teachers and others interested in education, the valuable mass of material that, in the form of educational statistics and reports, has been collected both by Government offices and by private individuals. Were a list of the many writers consulted added, it would seem pedantic; and, as the author claims no originality for himself, it is hoped that the omission of such a list will be excused. Excerpt from State Education at Home and Abroad A democratic system of education gives every child free access to a school under public control; it links the primary to the secondary and technical schools, and these in turn to the Universities; to a talented boy or girl it offers an Open course from Kindergarten to College. England possesses no such ordered scheme. Even her primary schools, the sole class to which she has given tardy and grumbling attention, are not adapted to form the base of a national system. Excerpt from Technical Education: Abroad and at Home This pamphlet is a reprint of a short series of letters contributed during the past winter to the Morning Herald. I have given them this more permanent form at the request of friends of University Consolidation, and of men who fuel our need of Technical Education. My facts I have drawn from a great variety of sources. I may mention: Rapport sur l'organisation de l'enseignement industriel en Allemagne et en Suisse, published in 1864, by the French Government; Russell's Systematic Technical Education, 1869; Matthew Arnold's Report to the British Government on the Schools of France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, 1868; Preussens landwirthschaftliche Verwaltung, 1875-7; L'enseignement agricole en France, by H. Johanet, 1882; Technical Education in a Saxon Town, by Felkin, 1881; Agricultural Education, by Prof. W. Johnston, 1881; Liversidge's Report to the Government of New South Wales, on Museums and Scientific and Technical Instruction in Great Britain, and on the Continent of Europe, 1880; the Report of the Quebec Commissioner of Public Works and Agriculture, 1880; Report of tho United States Commissioner of Education, for 1879; Discussions on Technical Education, published by the American Institute of Mining Engineers, 1870; Apprenticeship Schools in France, and other pamphlets, by Prof. S. P. Thompson, Bristol; The Future of Mechanics' Institutions, by Prof. W. E. Ayrton, London; Report to the Japanese Government on the Engineering College, Tokio, 1878; papers in the Transactions of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, 1875-81, various Circulars of Information issued by the U. S. Bureau of Education; the Education Reports of the Provinces of Canada; and circulars, prospectuses, and calendars of Universities, Colleges, and Technical Schools. Excerpt from School Feeding: Its History and Practice at Home and Abroad The main principle which should guide us in discussing the question of the State and Child Wel fare, I consider, is that the State looks after the child primarily because he is a child, and not because he is destitute or sick or criminally inclined. There fore it behoves us not to wait until one or more of these calamities overtakes him before we super vise his upbringing. This principle was half con ceded by the establishment of an Education Author ity. Half only, for until lately the child's parents still had to be destitute before the State concerned itself in any way with his bodily needs. Years of experience, however, in the teaching of underfed children have brought home to our people the fact that we cannot separate mental and bodily welfare. The prolonged controversy over the feeding of school children has led to the acceptance of a second principle of action: that the welfare of the child should be looked after by one authority only - zia, that the necessary feeding should be undertaken by the School Authority, and not by the Poor Law Guardians. Excerpt from Educational Plans for the American Army Abroad The number of men asked for from our colleges and public schools is very moderate in view of the fact that the Army Educational Commission has to provide for the immediate educational needs of an army of men. The pro portion of these eager to pursue some studies in evening hours When at training camps and other places back of the lines, both as a change from military routine and m prepara tion for life' s work on return to America, 1s much larger than our people at home realize. Army Headquarters m France firmly believes, as Will appear in this volume, that an educa tional program can do much to maintain and stimulate the morale of these men today and that it Will be essential to prevent the long period of demobilization from being a period of demoralization. The demand for classes and lectures Will, of course, increase enormously When peace comes, but Whether this be near or far off, the need of supplying both teachers and textbooks is immediate. The former Will be drawn mainly from the Army itself - those sent from this country being employed as supervisors, administrators, and normal teachers. This message, indicating that the time has come for an intensive campaign to secure educational leaders for the American Army abroad, the frequent requests for informa tion from various sources, and the appearance in the daily and periodical press of many inaccurate, incomplete, and unauthorized statements of the overseas edu cational plans have made the publication of this little volume necessary at the present time. Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap

Genre: Education and globalization
ISBN: 9781642670578

Higher education needs a new, holistic assessment of global learning. The studies in this edited volume investigate not just student learning, but also faculty experiences, program structures, and pathways that impact global learning. Showcasing recent, multi-institutional research related to global learning, this book expands the context of global learning to show its antecedents and impacts as a part of the larger higher education experience. Chapters look at recent developments such as short-term, off-campus, international study and certificate/medallion programs, as well as blended learning environments and undergraduate research, all in the context of multi-institutional comparisons. Global learning is also situated in a larger university context. Thus, there is a growing need for bridging across disciplinary and administrative silos, silos that are culturally bound within academia. The gaps between these silos matter as students seek to integrate off- and on-campus learning, and it is up to the academy to mind those gaps.

Excerpt from The Teacher's Encyclopaedia, Vol. 4 of 7: Of the Theory, Method, Practice, History and Development of Education at Home and Abroad This volume opens with the article by Dr. Drummond on "Child and School Hygiene, with some account of Child Physiology and Pathology, including the Commoner Children's Diseases." This article will not only be found of great use to the teacher for his own information, but will also form a useful fount of material for the teaching of hygiene as a school subject. It has been assumed throughout the article that the teacher is familiar with elementary physiology. Dr. Drummond's article is followed by others which deal with the healthy condition of the child, such as "Medical Inspection of School Children," "Physical Training in Elementary, Secondary, and Girls' Schools," "Play," and "The Provision of School Meals." All of these articles are related to Dr. Drummond's article: for instance, in the article on the Provision of School Meals the organisation is discussed, while in Dr. Drummond's article will be found the actual details as to suitable diet; in the case of Physical Training, the exercises necessary for healthy boys and girls are discussed, while in Dr. Drummond's article will be found information as to the treatment of special cases of malformation; and the article on "Medical Inspection" deals with the general organisation of such inspection, while in Dr. Drummond's article many of the actual details of such inspection are given. The volume therefore should be regarded as a whole. In the following volume the subject is completed by articles on "School Architecture," "Open-air Schools," and "The Boy Scout Movement." Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill.
