Excerpt from Scenes in Hawaii, or Life in the Sandwich Islands As I have been induced by kind friends to give publicity in this form to my notes and observations while on my journey to Hawaii and stay there, I must ask them and others who may care to read them, to be lenient in criticism, and to remem ber my only wish is to interest by telling them a little of this small Kingdom in the Pacific, generally known only as the most encouraging exemplification of the noble efforts of missionaries to civilize and christianize a savage and voluptuous race. Alas, for this, the finest example of self-sacrificing men and women, for the boast is, sad to say only a boast; and alas, as the group of Islands which Captain Cook discoveredtin 1776 - and on one of which, Hawaii - he was murdered on his second visit in 1778, at Kealakekua Bay. Excerpt from Lecture and Sketches of Life on the Sandwich Islands: And Hawaiian Travel and Scenery And no missionary from the first to the present time has ever received the least unkindness from their hands and I defy the whole host of them to prove anything to the contrary. Captain Clark, who succeeded Cook in command, landed a body of mariners, slew many natives and burned their huts to the ground. Hostilities ceased on the condition that Cook's remains be returned, which being done, they were buried in the placid waters of Kalakakua Bay, February 21, 1779. Excerpt from Kohala of Hawaii: A Story of the Sandwich Islands Revolution No Alien land in all the world has so strong an attraction, so profound a charm for the American who has trod its emerald shores, as beautiful "Hawaii" - the native, and hence the proper, name for what Captain Cook, their discoverer, called the "Sandwich Islands." Sleeping or waking, how lovingly its beauties haunt me as I, fresh from its ever-blooming gardens and ever-burning volcanoes, sit down to write, from a heart that is full of it, the story of the last great drama enacted in that fair land, for whose possession the maritime nations of the world are intriguing to-day. Chapter I. The Paradise Of The Pacific. Two Miles back from the capital city of Honolulu there rises an extinct volcano, known far and near as the "Punch Bowl," and accessible from the town by a fine road. Excerpt from Life in the Sandwich Islands: Or the Heart of the Pacific, as It Was and Is We call this book The Heart of the Pacific, for two reasons: first, because the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, which form its subject-matter, hold about the same relation to other parts of the Pacific as the heart does to the rest of the human body. Second, because these Islands bid fair to become the religious Protestant Heart of the great Ocean, whose pulsations at different times we have herein marked and interpreted. Although independent and whole of itself, it has a connection which will be seen with The Island-World of the Pacific. The writer believes it may fulfil a useful part, in directing the general interest now felt in the young Island-Kingdom of Hawaii. The perpetuity of the pure Hawaiian race there is daily becoming more and more doubtful. But, as it has been remarked of New Zealand, the natives, though melting away, are not lost. They are emerging into another and a. better class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
