Electromagnetic (EM) wave scattering is of fundamental importance to antenna and radar design engineering, and the increasing interest in metamaterials has created a need for new approaches to solving scattering problems for characterizing engineered media. This book lays the theoretical foundation for new computer programs in computational electromagnetics (CEM) and meets the need of today's researchers. This book represents over 30 years of the author's experience teaching this topic, with extensive lectures notes expanded to include advanced concepts and mathematical solutions to cover modern effects on metamaterials and related advanced complexities. Problems and solutions at the end of each chapter help to reinforce concepts and highlight applications. This is an ideal text for advanced graduate students and researchers in EM and applied physics.

The electromagnetic scattering from a geometrically fat tubular cylinder above a dissipative dielectric half-space has been investigated. Extensive experimental data were obtained and were found to be in agreement with theoretical results. The theory made use of an explicit analytical solution of the scattering from such a cylinder when in a single medium. Because the cylinder is a finite object with two variable geometrical parameters, it represents a very useful model for future experimental studies on the scattering from more complicated objects. The current distribution excited by an external field on a perfectly conducting cylindrical loop with zero thickness placed above the earth's surface with its axis normal to the earth is obtained. The case two coupled coaxial loops at different separations has also been solved. A variational principle is employed in the derivation. (Author).
