Big cats such as lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars fascinate us like few other creatures. They are enduring symbols of natural majesty and power. Yet despite the magnetic appeal of the big cats, their origins and evolutionary history remain poorly understood—and human activity threatens to put an end to the big cats’ glory. On the Prowl is a fully illustrated and approachable guide to the evolution of the big cats and what it portends for their conservation today. Mark Hallett and John M. Harris trace the origins of these iconic carnivores, venturing down the evolutionary pathways that produced the diversity of big cat species that have walked the earth. They place the evolution and paleobiology of these species in the context of ancient ecosystems and climates, explaining what made big cats such efficient predators and analyzing their competition with other animals. Hallett and Harris pay close attention to human impact, from the evidence of cave paintings and analysis of ancient extinctions up to present-day crises. Their engaging and carefully documented account is brought to life through Hallett’s detailed, vivid illustrations, based on the most recent research by leading paleontologists. Offering a fresh look at the rise of these majestic animals, On the Prowl also makes a powerful case for renewed efforts to protect big cats and their habitats before it is too late.

Cat experts Fiona and Mel Sunquist present comprehensive entries for each of the thirty-seven cat species that include color distribution maps and up-to-date information related to the species' IUCN conservation and management statuses, while their informative sidebars reveal why male lions have manes (and why dark manes are sexiest), how cats see with their whiskers, the truth behind our obsession with white lions and tigers, and why cats can't be vegetarians. The Wild Cat Book also highlights the grave threats faced by the world's wild cats--from habitat destruction to human persecution.

Big cats are not easily domesticated and should never be part of circus life. We should respect them in their natural environment. Let us take a look at some big cats: Firstis the lions who can be found in South Sahara in South Africa. It is one of the four big cats that can roar but it cannot purr. The male rarely hunts but provides protection for his family called a Pride. The females do the hunting. Lions are the most social of all the big cats. Next are the tigers and they are found in India, China, and Indonesia. A tiger can weigh up to 500 pounds and is the largest of the big cats. Then the leopards are found in Africa and south of the Sahara. They can weigh up to 155 pounds and feed on medium to small prey they usually hunt alone at night and are also great tree climbers and leopards are loners. Then the Jaguar who is also one of the big cats that can roar. It is also one of the biggest cats found in America. They are found in the southwest US and Mexico along with Central America and can weigh up to 200 pounds. They were the third largest cat and like to swim. They hunt by stalking and ambushing. The Snow Leopard is found in Central and South Asia, it is a big cat but cannot roar. It is a great jumper and weighs between 60 and 120 pounds. It has a stocky body, thick fur, and small ears. The cheetah is next and is found in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. The cheetahs do not roar but they're the fastest animals on land. They have a very slender build and a flexible spine that allows them to run so fast they weigh between 80 and 90 pounds. Let's not forget the clouded leopard which is also a big cat that cannot roar and it's really a bridge between the big and the small cats it is actually medium in size and weighs between 30 and 60 pounds.
