Excerpt from Saving Coal in Boiler Plats This paper, published by the Bureau of Mines in the interest of more efficient utilization of fuels in this country, gives suggestions as to what can be done in the boiler room to save coal. It covers the field between two other Bureau of Mines publications, Technical Paper 80, Hand Firing Soft Coal Under power-plant Boilers, and Bulletin 97, Sampling and Analysis of Flue Gases. It is written for the fireman, the engineer, and the owner of the small or medium size plant, which is, as a rule, hand fired. Excerpt from Hand Firing Soft Coal Under Power-Plant Boilers The Bureau -of Mines is making tests to determine how fuels can be used most efficiently for different purposes. This report contains descriptions of methods of firing soft coal under power-plant boilers and of methods of handling fire so as to have the least smoke and to get the most heat from the fuel. These descriptions are followed by discussions of the process of combustion and of the principal heat losses in an average power plant, because these discussions help to explain the reasons for the methods that are recommended. These methods have been tested in many plants by the writer when he was employed as fuel engineer by a large coal company. The descriptions and discussions are so arranged that each chapter is a complete unit and can be read by itself. Flue-gas analysis and its use in the operation of boiler furnaces are not treated in this paper, but will be discussed in another paper to be published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper seeks to meet the needs of the men, many without a technical education, who are employed in small plants of to horsepower capacity. For this reason the language used is plain and simple, and technical terms have been avoided as far as possible. However, it is difficult to describe a chemical process, such as the combustion of coal, without using chemical terms, but such terms as are used are explained in the text and also in the short glossary at the end of the report. Excerpt from Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Although the internal combustion engine may have a much extended future it does not at present compete with steam in large power plants. The steam boiler up to now is by no means a diminishing quantity, and any chemical knowledge which will increase its efficiency, preserve its life, and save coal deserves thought and consideration. Coal in the future is most likely to'be valued for its chemical products now destroyed in the furnace. Coal will have to be economized, and one way out of the difficulty will be to remove its valuable volatile products by distillation and use the residual cokes for steam-raising purposes. This may present difficulties at first, but these difficulties are not insuperable, and the same skill which has brought the furnace to its present state of perfection will be able to adapt it to the altered conditions. If it be more beneficial to the human race to utilize benzole for the manufacture of dyes and drugs than to burn it for raising steam, then the valuable benzole will be removed and the carbonaceous residues become the fuel of the future. Many of the chemical reactions herein described have been gathered from a long practical experience with high-pressure boilers working under varied-circumstances and conditions, and the analyses given in the text are original analyses made in the course of a somewhat extended practice. So far as possible, technical language and expressions have been avoided. The facts stated and the conclusions drawn have been described in the language of everyday life, so that those without more than a very limited acquaintance with chemistry may be able to understand and appreciate the results, and a chapter has been added explaining and illustra ting such technical expressions as it has been found necessary to use. Excerpt from Coal: Its Economical and Smokless Combustion This work was called forth by the lack of a thorough, comprehensive textbook on coal that would explain in clear, simple language just what must be known about the characteristics of the numerous varieties in order that coal may be purchased intelligently and burned economically and smokelessly. Fully ninety-eight per cent, of industrial plants use coal as a prime source of power, yet, owing to lack of knowledge of this subject, they seldom get the kind of coal best suited to their equipments. A large majority bum coal that can be burned neither economically nor smokelessly in their plants. Instances are on record where selecting the coal best suited to a plant reduced the coal bills fully twenty percent; and it is safe to say that fully ten percent can be saved in half the plants in operation simply by selecting the right coal for the furnace and draft. In many cases plants have been forced to restrict their outputs or to increase their boiler capacity by an extra unit, when by simply selecting the right coal for their furnaces and by adjusting the draft to suit their conditions they would have gained the desired increase in capacity. With a given equipment and the right kind of coal, the capacity, economy, and smokeless operation of a locomotive or a power plant depends on the right manipulation of the fires. In this work, that phase of the subject is treated in an exhaustive manner, so that a person of average intelligence by studying the text can determine what is the best coal to purchase for his particular plant; what equipment is best suited to bum a particular kind of coal; what method of firing is best adapted to the coal and furnace; and what the best method of procedure is for the prevention of smoke. A Short History of Wisconsin

Rediscover Wisconsin history from the very beginning. A Short History of Wisconsin recounts the landscapes, people, and traditions that have made the state the multifaceted place it is today. With an approach both comprehensive and accessible, historian Erika Janik covers several centuries of Wisconsin's remarkable past, showing how the state was shaped by the same world wars, waves of new inhabitants, and upheavals in society and politics that shaped the nation. Swift, authoritative, and compulsively readable, A Short History of Wisconsin commences with the glaciers that hewed the region's breathtaking terrain, the Native American cultures who first called it home, and French explorers and traders who mapped what was once called "Mescousing." Janik moves through the Civil War and two world wars, covers advances in the rights of women, workers, African Americans, and Indians, and recent shifts involving the environmental movement and the conservative revolution of the late 20th century. Wisconsin has hosted industries from fur-trapping to mining to dairying, and its political landscape sprouted figures both renowned and reviled, from Fighting Bob La Follette to Joseph McCarthy. Janik finds the story of a state not only in the broad strokes of immigration and politics, but also in the daily lives shaped by work, leisure, sports, and culture. A Short History of Wisconsin offers a fresh understanding of how Wisconsin came into being and how Wisconsinites past and present share a deep connection to the land itself.

Since the late 18th century, when it emerged as a source of heating and, later, steam power, coal has brought untold benefits to mankind. Even today, coal generates almost 45 percent of the world's power. Our modern technological society would be inconceivable without coal and the energy it provides. Unfortunately, that society will not survive unless we wean ourselves off coal. The largest single source of greenhouse gases, coal is responsible for 43 percent of the world's carbon emissions. Richard Martin, author of SuperFuel, argues that to limit catastrophic climate change, we must find a way to power our world with less polluting energy sources, and we must do it in the next couple of decades—or else it is "game over." It won't be easy: as coal plants shut down across the United States, and much of Europe turns to natural gas, coal use is growing in the booming economies of Asia— particularly China and India. Even in Germany, where nuclear power stations are being phased out in the wake of the Fukushima accident, coal use is growing. Led by the Sierra Club and its ambitious "Beyond Coal" campaign, environmentalists hope to drastically reduce our dependence on coal in the next decade. But doing so will require an unprecedented contraction of an established, lucrative, and politically influential worldwide industry. Big Coal will not go gently. And its decline will dramatically change lives everywhere—from Appalachian coal miners and coal company executives to activists in China's nascent environmental movement. Based on a series of journeys into the heart of coal land, from Wyoming to West Virginia to China's remote Shanxi Province, hundreds of interviews with people involved in, or affected by, the effort to shrink the industry, and deep research into the science, technology, and economics of the coal industry, Coal Wars chronicles the dramatic stories behind coal's big shutdown—and the industry's desperate attempts to remain a global behemoth. A tour de force of literary journalism, Coal Wars will be a milestone in the climate change battle.
