An expert guide to the new health trend that is helping people around the world feel more energised and less stressed. Saved by the Siesta explains how siestas work and the remarkable role they can play in overcoming the destructive effects that a shortage of sleep can have on the brain and the body. A daytime nap fulfils all the same functions as a night’s sleep — hormonal, purifying, curative, consolidating, and reinvigorating. It also has the same therapeutic values: it helps us to combat pain, depression, weak immunity, stress, hypertension, excess weight, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. But to take advantage of all this we need to be aware of the siesta’s subtleties: its various types; the correct body position to adopt; the times that are conducive to sleeping; the most effective duration; the stages of sleep that heighten awareness, cognitive performance, memory, and creativity; and how to get to sleep quickly and wake up without feeling sleepy. Saved by the Siesta provides all this information, and more. It is a lucid and accessible synthesis of the science of sleep, and a practical guide to the benefits of napping.

With charming urbanity and lightness of touch, Thierry Paquot argues the case for those few snatched moments of rest taken during the day in an elegantly illustrated book that will make a handsome gift for any occasion. This refreshingly original contribution to the literature of relaxation is a wonderful, sometimes erotic philosophical read that encourages us to cherish the age-old tradition of the siesta, which has ancient roots in antiquity yet is yielding even in Mediterranean lands to the tyranny of the 9-to-5 workday. Whether a heavy sleep or a five-minute doze, an afternoon nap or a mid-morning daydreaming, the siesta comes in many forms, all of which permit us to relax and reflect in the midst of a hectic daily schedule. More than that, the siesta represents the art of living ― an assertion of human autonomy in an increasingly corporatized and globalized culture. Each chapter muses on a different aspect of the siesta and celebrates the importance of “unconstructed” time as depicted in painting, literature, and philosophy throughout history. These moments of rest are a hidden muse responsible for many of our cultural monuments, and allow an intertwining of the intellectual and the erotic in everyday life. The book is punctuated with 16 illustrations depicting the art inspired by the siesta. The Art of the Siesta is a celebration of those fleeting moments when the mind is free to reflect, enjoy, and recover. As Paquot writes, “the siesta is a means for us to reclaim our own time, outside the clockmakers’ control. The siesta is our liberator.”

Millions of people struggle every day against a chronic lack of sleep that exhausts them and threatens their health. There is a simple remedy: a daytime nap. J ÜRGEN AscHOFF "Very bad habit! Very bad habit!" Captain Giles to Joseph Conrad who had taken a siesta. -Conrad: The Shadow Line On the Multiplicity of Rest-Activity Cycles: Some Historical and Conceptual Notes According to its title this book tries to answer the profound question of why we nap-and why Captain Giles was wrong in blaming Conrad for having napped. However, in this volume the term nap is not used in the narrower sense of an afternoon siesta; instead, emphasis is placed on the recurrent alternation between states of alertness and drowsiness, i. e. , on rest-activity cycles of high er frequency throughout the 24 hr. In view of this focus, two authors (Stampi, in Chapter I, and Ball, in Chapter 3) rightly refer to the psychologist Szymanski who was among the first to describe "polyphasic" activity patterns. Hence, I consider it appropriate to open this foreword with a few historical remarks. At the time when Szymanski (1920) made the distinction between "monophasic" and "polyphasic" rest-activity patterns and sleep-wake cy cles, respectively, not much was known about the mechanisms of such temporal structures. Although the botanists quite some time ago had demonstrated the endogenous nature of the "monophasic" sleep movements in plants, the hypothesis of an (still unknown) external driving force was favored by those who studied rhythms in animals and humans (Aschoff, 1990).

In The Siesta and the Midnight Sun, award-winning science writer Jessa Gamble explores the continuing significance of the biological clocks that governed our lives before modern technology annihilated the night. She describes experiments that show both rats and people adhere to a 24-hour schedule even when deprived of daylight. When our days are disrupted by shift work, jet lag or space travel, things go wrong. The disastrous chemical leak at Bhopal, India and the calamitous launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger both were caused partly by sleepless workers. Insomnia is rampant in the Western world.
