Excerpt from Sanctuaries The subject which we are about to consider has employed the pens of many well-known writers, whose works are most of them easily accessible. What they have said has been said at length, and said well. I do not propose to go over quite their ground, however attractive the structures which they have reared, or however important and interesting the History which they have illustrated. The inquirer will find that material ready to serve him in the writings of men of exceptional competence in Scriptural Archeology, down from Josephus and Father Sarpi, and Archbishop Potter and Bingham, to the writers of separate papers in our various Archaeologia, and to the Summaries in Law Dictionaries and the Dictionaries of Biblical and Classical Antiquities. This institution of sanctuaries has its root in a sentiment common to all humanity, i.e., that a peculiar sacredness attaches to particular places, as Tacitus expressly tells us in one of his two famous treatises. Excerpt from The Sanctuary Blair Martin stood in the big doorway looking at the gay scene before her. She was tired and glad to get away from the fashionable crowd for a little while, and grateful that the doorway shaded her from curious eyes. Since a small child, and all through the years that her father had been amassing his vast fortune, she had resented and shrunk from the often overheard remarks and the curious gaze people had bestowed upon her. Her sensitiveness to public comment was oddly at variance with the natural independence and frankness of speech she had inherited from her father, Andrew Martin. It was perhaps a legacy from the dead mother whose memory she adored, as a woman of eight and twenty adores a memory cherished by a girl somewhat over seventeen. The incessant noise of the touring cars and roadsters annoyed her as they swept up the long driveway and deposited their gaily dressed occupants by the main tent where Mrs. Weston-Smith received her guests. An unceasing hum of voices, from the low masculine bass to the clearer feminine treble - a gamut of human sound - came to her from the throng scattered over the wide lawns and from the bazaar tables that stood nearer to the trees. From the immense temporary pavilion to the right came the clatter of dishes and again the same incessant noise. She sighed wearily. Excerpt from The Sanctuaries: And Sanctuary Seekers of Mediæval England MY interest was first aroused in the question of sanctuary rights in mediaeval England by inquiries that were made of me by the late Mr. Mazzinghi, Librarian of the William Salt Library, Stafford, in 1886 - 87. I had at that time the pleasure of the friendship of that gentleman, as I was a member of the editorial committee of the Salt Archaeological Society. Mr. Mazzinghi published a short treatise on this subject in 1887, and it has up till now remained the only English book dealing exclu sively with Sanctuaries. It is doing no injustice to that work to say, notwithstanding its obvious research, that the treatment is scanty and at times inaccurate. Excerpt from Celebrated Sanctuaries of the Madonna Early in the fifth century - probably A.D. 404 - the congregation of the faithful in a town on the coast of Africa were much disturbed by the rumour of a scandal in the episcopal palace. The details of the story were imperfectly known, and of course variously told; but the distress of the little flock was so great that at last the Bishop published a Pastoral on the subject. In this Pastoral he lamented that there should be any necessity for an episcopal exhortation on occasions like the present; he urged that the distinct prophecies of our Blessed Lord ought to have prepared men's minds for such exhibitions of human weakness and malice; nevertheless he confessed that they were trials dangerous to the weak, painful to all, and that therefore he would gladly have spared his flock the knowledge of what had happened, if this had been possible. Now, however, that false reports were afloat, it was better that they should know the facts, which were briefly these: - A priest of his household, named Boniface, had brought a grave charge of immorality against another inmate of the house, who was not yet a priest, but desirous of becoming one. The charge was denied, and met by a counter-charge; nevertheless, the Bishop had a strong impression that it was true. Excerpt from Sanctuary The girl's smile prolonged itself at the sight of a figure approaching from the lower slopes above the lake. The path was a short cut from the Peyton place, and She had known that Denis would appear in it at about that hour. Her smile, however, was prolonged not so much by his approach as by her sense of the impossibility of com municating her mood to him. The feeling did not disturb her. She could not imagine sharing her deepest moods with any one, and the world in which she lived with Denis was too bright and Spacious to ad mit of any sense of constraint. Her smile was in truth a tribute to that clear-eyed directness of his which was so often a refuge from her own complexities. It is doing no injustice to that work to say, notwithstanding its obvious research, that the treatment is scanty and at times inaccurate. Having occasion six years ago to consult various old Assize Rolls, my interest in this fascinating and much neglected side of England's social and religious life, extending over several centuries, became revived. From time to time documents have been consulted, with the result that the present book is submitted to the public. Excerpt from Sanctuary and Other Poems Not as once with shrinking heart and fearful The long white road I take, Not as once with thoughts I let be tearful For very sorrow's sake; Nay, I have done with folly, Have put off melancholy, And joyful now take up my heavy pack, Not looking back, But forward pressing on, Joy my companion. And every day my burden Grows lighter, and a song, Not grief is mine for guerdon As I march along; My feet are firm and strong.
