In this second installment called Sammys Science Arizona, I deal solely with animals and plants inhabiting the state of Arizona. As always, I tell the science facts in this book using my mixed species animal family characters from our radio broadcast. The main characters are Sammy Skunk, the dad; Daphne Skunk, the mama; Erasmus, the teenage porcupine; Ewald, the middle school-age roadrunner; our pet orange tabby cat, Bonkers; and Tremor, the wee skateboarding mouse. In this book, Randy Raccoon, Eddy Beaver, Donkey Dan, Beanie the Goat, Big Red, and a few other characters also appear. Though we have many dangerous animals in the state of Arizona, most are small, including the coral snake, several species of rattle snakes, scorpions, centipedes, Gila monsters, several spiders, and many other small creatures. There are also a few dangerous desert plants. Then we also have six medium-to-large carnivores that call our state their home. I hope that by reading this book, visitors, new residents, as well as those that have been residents for a few years will learn to be careful while hiking in the states wilderness areas. Enjoy your everyday lives, and be careful while hiking, camping, biking, or hunting in Arizona. Never go hiking without a friend or two along, and like me, carry a big knife, plenty of water, a good hat, plenty of sunscreen, and a good walking stick with you. Enjoy Arizona. Sammy

Don't miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+ The first novel in the thrilling series featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box. Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police. As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

In this gloriously illustrated companion to her crime novels featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, Ann Cleeves takes readers through a year on Shetland. Discover its past, meet its people, celebrate its festivals and see how the flora and fauna of the islands change with the seasons. An archipelago of more than a hundred islands, Shetland is the one of the most remote places in the United Kingdom. Its fifteen hundred miles of shore mean that wherever one stands, there is a view of the sea. It has sheltered voes and beaches and dramatically exposed cliffs, lush meadows full of wild flowers in the summer and bleak hilltops where only the hardiest of plants will grow. It is a place where traditions are valued and celebrated, but new technologies and ways of working are also embraced. Whether it is the drama of the Viking fire festival of Up Helly Aa in winter, or the piercing blue and hot pink of spring flowers on the clifftops, the long, white nights of midsummer or the fierce gales and high tides of autumn, Shetland is vividly captured in all its bleak and special beauty. A book to treasure, full of photos and insightful notes about the stunning location of the Shetland series, now a major BBC One drama starring Douglas Henshall.

From author and filmmaker Sandi Tan, director of the acclaimed documentary Shirkers, comes a novel about a neighborhood of immigrants, seekers, lovers, and lurkers. The residents of Santa Claus Lane do their best to stay out of each other’s way, but desire, fury and mischief too often propel these suburban neighbors to collide. Precocious Korean American sisters Mira and Rosemary find their world rocked by a suicide, and they must fight to keep their home; a charismatic and creepy drama teacher grooms his students; a sardonic gay horror novelist finds that aging is more terrifying than any monster; and a white hippie mom and her adopted Vietnamese daughter realize that their anger binds them rather than pushes them apart. Lurkers is an homage to the rangy beauty of Los Angeles and the surprising power that we have to change the lives of those around us.
