Targeted school violence constitutes an ever-present concern for schools, families, and communities. Despite their statistical rarity, tragic events involving targeted school violence seem to increase year after year, raising concerns about the schools’ ability to protect students, teachers, and other members of the school community. Presently, and despite the fact that school officials are tasked with the responsibility of protecting students and engaging in safety protocols, there is an absence of programs and/or interventions that offer effective and consistent training to school personnel on the topic of targeted school violence. Current interventions aimed towards preventing and decreasing targeted school violence have limited empirical support, and just a small number have been systematically evaluated. Given these gaps in the research, this program seeks to enhance the capacity of our schools to prevent and decrease targeted school violence events, by providing education and training to teachers and staff members in reducing self-harm and school violence. Effectively preparing teachers and school personnel to perform safety related responsibilities and to intervene safely with students at-risk might potentially assist in reducing targeted school violence events, thereby making our schools and communities safer.
