Excerpt from Russian Revolution Aspects The aim of this book is not to give a history or interpretation of the Revolution in Russia; but to record in narrative form the more striking events seen by a newspaper correspondent long familiar with the country, people and language. Many books purport ing to give a rationale or interpretation of these events have already appeared; and these are good or bad according as the writers were equipped with a qualify ing knowledge of Russian conditions. As far as I know, I was the only foreigner who witnessed some of the occurrences, and visited some of the places here described; and the amount of material collected directly and therefore not to be omitted was so great that for the causes, the inner course and the future prospects of the Revolution there has been little space. Further, the time has not yet come for treating the Revolution in historical perspective and analyzing its finer elements. Russia is to-day in a state of flux, probably indeed still early in the prolonged process that will in future be called her Revolution; and no final judgment upon the events so far accomplished can be passed until the lines of ultimate progress are more clearly revealed. Excerpt from Three Aspects of the Russian Revolution The five weeks that the Belgian Socialist Mission spent in Russia allowed of our seeing much and questioning many persons. We visited the Workmen's and Soldiers' Committees, as well as the Ministers, Social ists as well as Cadets. We met the represem tatives of all the different political opinions from Polish nationalists to the anarchists installed in the Villa Dournovo. In Petro grad, as in Moscow and Kieff, we saw the Labour Organizations, interviewed members of the Belgian colony and the leaders of Employers Associations. We came into contact with the masses - we must have spoken to at least a hundred thousand persons - as well as their leaders. We listened to the pessimists as well as to the optimists. We had an opportunity of observing the enormous difficulties existing in Russia today. But we never lost sight of the many reasons that, in spite of every thing, justified' young democratic Russia's belief in her future. Excerpt from The Church and the Russian Revolution The epochal changes which revolutionized the very foundations of Russian life had a rousing effect upon the rest of the world. Where changes of such magni tude and far-reaching consequences are concerned, it is inevitable that the movement causing them be both extolled and condemned by doctrinaires of opposite tempers, without either' much critical regard for the exact course of events, or much historical discrimina tion of them. Hence, before any judgment worthy of respect may be passed upon such a cataclysmic event, it is imperative for a careful investigator to make sure of the exact facts upon which to base his opinions and conclusions. Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Excerpt from The Russian Bolshevik Revolution This book is not written to make out a case, but to set forth what appear to be the significant facts. It is Offered on the theory that intelligent people are tired of being victims of propaganda about Russia and will welcome a book that is not trying to give their minds a certain twist. I can truthfully aver that when I set pen to paper I had no rigid mental attitudes toward the phases of the Russian revolution, so that such interpretations as I venture on have come out of my study of the facts themselves. Excerpt from Inside the Russian Revolution And what do you think happened to that train my daughter was to have taken? He asked. It was the regular night express to Petrograd, correspond ing somewhat to the Congressional Limited between New York and Washington. A few miles out of Moscow a difference arose between the engineer and the stoker, and in order to settle it they stopped the train and had a fight. One of the men hit the other on the head with a monkey wrench, injuring him pretty badly. Authority of some kind stepped in and arrested the assailant. The engineer's cab was blood-stained, and some authority unhitched the engine and sent it back to Moscow as evidence. The train all this time, with its hundreds of passengers, stood on the tracks waiting for a new engine and crew, and if it was not run into and wrecked it was because it was lucky. Excerpt from The Russian Peasant and the Revolution Of all the elements that make up the Russian masses, the peasant is by far the most important. Actually and potentially the peasant is the mightiest force in Russian life and, therefore, in the Russian Revolution, and bids fair to become the supreme power in the future of the nation. He constitutes the vast bulk of the population, about eighty per cent of the total. The soldier and the proletariat, though propelled in their revolutionary crusade by motives largely grown out of their particular social environ.
