Fyodor Sergeyevich Olferieff (1885&–1971) led a remarkable life in the shadows of history. This book presents his memoirs for the first time, translated and annotated by his granddaughter Tanya A. Cameron. Born into a noble family, Olferieff was a Russian career military officer who observed firsthand key events of the early twentieth century, including the 1905&–7 revolution, the Great War, the collapse of the imperial state, and the civil wars in Ukraine and Crimea. Olferieff wrestles with moral and political questions, wondering whether his own advantages could be justified—and whether, if born a peasant, he might have thrown himself into the revolution. As Gary Hamburg writes in an illuminating companion essay, Olferieff wrote "to understand himself and to record his broken life for posterity" as a privileged observer of a bloody, historically pivotal era.

Bronze Medalist, 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the World History Category Gold Winner, 2017 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in the History category Major General Konstantin Ivanovich Globachev was chief of the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police, in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) in the two years preceding the 1917 Russian Revolution. This book presents his memoirs—translated in English for the first time—interposed with those of his wife, Sofia Nikolaevna Globacheva. The general's writings, which he titled The Truth of the Russian Revolution, provide a front-row view of Tsar Nicholas II's final years, the revolution, and its tumultuous aftermath. Globachev describes the political intrigue and corruption in the capital and details his office's surveillance over radical activists and the mysterious Rasputin. His wife takes a more personal approach, depicting her tenacity in the struggle to keep her family intact and the family's flight to freedom. Her descriptions vividly portray the privileges and relationships of the noble class that collapsed with the empire. Translator Vladimir G. Marinich includes biographical information, illustrations, a glossary, and a timeline to contextualize this valuable primary source on a key period in Russian history.

These are the memoirs of Anna Alexandrovna Vyrubova, a close friend of the last Imperial family of Russia, and aim to set right the many false and invented stories written about Nicholas II and Alexandra and Anna’s relationship with them. The book provides rare descriptions of the home life of the Tsar and his family, vividly portrays her perils in prison and her narrow escape from execution, and recollects the enormous hardship she endured avoiding the Bolsheviks before escaping to Finland in December 1920. A truly fascinating read.

As the strength of the Russian Empire began to falter during World War One, the seeds of Revolution were sown. Princess Julia Cantacuzene, a granddaughter of Ulysses S. Grant, was married to a Russian aristocrat and general, Michael Cantacuzene, and recorded in fascinating detail her experiences of those tumultuous days. Covering from just before the war broke out in 1914 and initial setbacks of the Russian army through to the growth of competing factions after the abdication of Nicholas II and the subsequent Bolshevik uprising, it continues until their eventual escape from Russia in 1917. Cantacuzene documented not only the broad changes that were occurring through the Revolution but also their own smaller concerns and experiences, therefore providing an extremely personal view of the Russian Revolution. From Rasputin to Trotsky, Kerensky to the Grand Duke Nicolas Nicolaiovitch, Cantacuzene provides in-depth analysis of all the characters who were instrumental in shaping this monumental moment in history. Cantacuzene travelled back and forth across the empire, including Petrograd, Kief and the Crimea, in order to evade tumult that was surrounding them, but they never truly escaped and instead they became witnesses to how the revolutionary fervor was affecting different parts of the empire. Revolutionary Days by Princess Cantacuzene is a brilliant first-person account of the Russian Revolution which observes both the Imperial and Bolshevik positions of that time. Julia Dent Grant Cantacuzene Spiransky, Princess Cantacuzene, was an American author and historian. She was the eldest child of Frederick Dent Grant and his wife Ida Marie Honor, and the first grandchild of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. In 1899, she married Prince Mikhail Cantacuzene, a Russian general and diplomat. Princess Cantacuzene was the author of three first-person accounts of the events leading up to the Russian Revolution in 1917, as well as a personal historian of the Russian people during that time. This book was published in 1919 and she eventually died in America in 1975 at the age of ninety-nine.

SELECTED AS A BOOK OF THE YEAR IN THE TELEGRAPH AND EVENING STANDARD '[The] centenary will prompt a raft of books on the Russian Revolution. They will be hard pushed to better this highly original, exhaustively researched and superbly constructed account.' Saul David, Daily Telegraph 'A gripping, vivid, deeply researched chronicle of the Russian Revolution told through the eyes of a surprising, flamboyant cast of foreigners in Petrograd, superbly narrated by Helen Rappaport.' Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of The Romanovs Between the first revolution in February 1917 and Lenin’s Bolshevik coup in October, Petrograd (the former St Petersburg) was in turmoil. Foreign visitors who filled hotels, bars and embassies were acutely aware of the chaos breaking out on their doorsteps. Among them were journalists, diplomats, businessmen, governesses and volunteer nurses. Many kept diaries and wrote letters home: from an English nurse who had already survived the sinking of the Titanic; to the black valet of the US Ambassador, far from his native Deep South; to suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, who had come to Petrograd to inspect the indomitable Women’s Death Battalion led by Maria Bochkareava. Drawing upon a rich trove of material and through eye-witness accounts left by foreign nationals who saw the drama unfold, Helen Rappaport takes us right up to the action – to see, feel and hear the Revolution as it happened.

Born into the comforts of the Russian aristocracy in 1852, Vera Figner as a child harbored the fairy-tale dream of one day becoming tsarina. By the age of thirty-two, however, Figner had become one of Russia's most vocal revolutionaries, a terrorist and member of the Executive Committee of the People's Will party, and a prisoner sentenced for life for her involvement in the assassination of Alexander II. In this classic memoir, Figner recounts her journey from aristocrat to revolutionary, candidly relating the experiences that shaped her ideas and provoked her to political action and violence. As she reflects on her own lifelong commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Russians, she reveals much about the concept, structure, and leadership behind the radical movement in late nineteenth-century Russia. In his incisive introduction to this edition, Richard Stites discusses the importance of the memoir as a personal testimony and provides background for understanding a courageous woman's role in the struggle for political change.
