If all sports are really about war, then rugby is a heart-thumping epic of bayonet charges and hand-to-hand fighting. In Memoirs of a Rugby-Playing Man, bestselling author Jay Atkinson describes his thirty-five year odyssey in the sport-from his rough and rowdy days at the University of Florida, through the intrigue of various foreign tours, club championships, and all star selections, up to his current stint with the freewheeling Vandals Rugby Club out of Los Angeles. Jay has played in more than 500 matches, for which he's suffered three broken ribs, a detached retina, a fractured cheekbone and orbital bone, four deadened teeth, and a dislocated ankle. Written in the style of Siegried Sassoon's Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Atkinson's book explains why it was all worth it--the sum total of his violent adventures, and the valuable insights he has gained from them.

"Theuns Stofberg's illustrious rugby career spanned from 1976 to 1985, and he is commonly considered one of the all-time Springbok greats. As the 36th captain of the Springboks, one of only 56 players to be given this honour, he was tough and uncompromising on the field but a true gentleman and great raconteur off it, which he proves with the anecdotes collected in this book. In Stories from the Touchline, he takes the reader behind the scenes, from his childhood days as a schoolboy rugby player to the 1981 flour-bomb tour of New Zealand and winning the Currie Cup for three different provinces - a feat unmatched to this day. He also writes about what it was like playing with legends such as Morné du Plessis, Gerrie Germishuys, Schalk Burger Sr and Gysie Pienaar, marvels at the fans' odd and often colourful behaviour, and affords readers a fascinating glimpse into the amateur days of rugby in South Africa. He also shares his personal struggles with a speech impediment and ill health, and coping with family tragedy, in his own inimitable way. By turns deeply personal, amusing and nostalgic, this book will be treasured by each and every South African rugby fan."--Page [4] of book cover.

Rugby Stories...and other misadventures was incredibly enjoyable. I'm a bit of a history buff and the one area of American rugby history I always wanted to know more about was the period in the 1960s and 70s, when the Eagles were just formulating. The generation of players that came of age during that period is only getting old and some of the stories from that time are getting lost. The greatest triumph of "Rugby Stories" is that it preserves that part of history for future generations. Written by former Eagle, UCLA, and Santa Monica player Dave Stephenson, "Rugby Stories" offers a unique take on a crucial period in U.S. rugby history. Stephenson's writing style is like his play on the field, solid with a touch of bravado. He tells the story of his emergence as a school player in England, to immigrant in Los Angeles where he finds rugby once again. Stephenson has an interesting life that in and of itself is well worth a story and when you throw in rugby, it makes a great combination. The inside knowledge Stephenson provides of the early Eagles is invaluable. It was a different time back then, and while things didn't always run smoothly, the passion that all of those involved had was impressive. If there is one disappointment, it's that Stephenson isn't around for years and years with the team, but that's something you'll have to read about in the book. It's more than just the early history of the Eagles that makes "Rugby Stories" valuable for the American rugby fans, it's the early history of UCLA and Santa Monica as well. Stephenson was part of Dennis Storer's legendary Bruins squads that challenged for the World Cup with Cal and UBC, as well as in the Monterey Tournament, the unofficial national championship at the time. He was also a founding member of Santa Monica Rugby Club. This is a crucial part of American rugby history and that should make "Rugby Stories" a crucial part of your rugby book collection. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I learned so much about American rugby history that I couldn't find anywhere else. ThisisAmericanrugby.com

The defining moment in the history of Natal and Sharks rugby was in 1990 when they won the Currie Cup for the first time, fittingly in the centenary year of the Natal Rugby Union. That was when they really came of age and became a confident outfit, setting the tone for the future. And in the last 25 years the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union, as it is now known, has indeed gone from strength to strength. Wim van der Berg's history of the Union takes us back to its modest beginnings in 1890 and traces the story of its provincial and international ventures, bringing us right up to 2014 - which was a year of mixed fortunes for the Sharks rugby side. He chronicles the ups and downs of a developing union, its clubs and schools sides and, more recently, its development programmes. Rich in anecdotes about the many colourful characters who made the history, and continue to do so today, this book, The Black & White Story, captures the undying spirit and passion of all who were, and are today, involved in the Union's many and varied activities. For the history of the KZNRU is indeed about its people - players, coaches, administrators and supporters - whose commitment to the Union has made it what it is today: one of the most successful and illustrious brands in international sport.

Nineteen ninety-seven is the most important year in rugby league history - at least since the Great Schism of 1895. It's also the year the sport's current administrators want you to forget, when a pay television war in Australia drove the game to the brink and brutally exposed it's ingrained qualities and flaws in all their bloody glory. Journalist Steve Mascord covered the Super League War for the Sydney Morning Herald and on the 25th anniversary of the divided season has interviewed more than 100 others who lived through it - from Ken Arthurson and John Ribot to Newcastle Knights ballboy Michael Maher - bringing you the absolute definitive story of rugby's Second Great Schism. It's the rugby league's most important story, being told while it's not too late. You'll never quite see the game the same way again.
