The contributions of Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (1888–1973), one of the most profound and original thinkers of the twentieth century, span several disciplines in the humanities—history, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, religion—although his work is ultimately uncategorizable. In 1933, immediately upon the ascent of Hitler, he emigrated to the United States from Germany, taught at Harvard for two years, and then at Dartmouth College until 1957. His voice was prophetic, urgent, compelling, and it remains relevant. This collection of essays is by a retired professor of history who was a student of Rosenstock-Huessy’s in the 1950s and found his lecturing transformative. It is not a nostalgic book, however. It is written with the conviction that Rosenstock-Huessy still needs to be heard, more urgently than ever for the betterment of humankind.

This classic, originally published in 1938, was reprinted in 1969 for a new generation by Berg Publishers. From the new introduction by Harold J. Berman: "That this book--written six decades ago--is without question an extraordinary book, a remarkable book, a fascinating book, has not saved it from relative obscurity. It is directed against conventional historiography, and for the most part the conventional historians have either ignored it or denounced it . . . [It] is a history in the best sense of the word. Although it embodies original scholarship of the highest professional quality, it is written primarily for the amateur, the person of general education, who wants to know where we came from and whither we are headed. But it is also a theory of history: how history should be understood, how historians should write about it . . .. Out of Revolution interprets modern Western history as a single 900-year period, initiated by total revolution . . . and punctuated thereafter by a series of total revolutions that broke out successively in the different European nations . . .. Rosenstock-Huessy was a prophet who, like many great prophets, failed in his own time, but whose time may now be coming."

The Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy Fund For four decades, the Fund operated a publishing wing, Argo Books, which published many of Rosenstock-Huessy's English-language works and unpublished manuscripts as books. (The German Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy Gesellschaft undertook similar efforts with the German-language works; the Dutch group Respondeo published a number of translations into Dutch.) The Fund recently decided to pass on responsibility for Rosenstock-Huessy's works to another publisher, and his English-language works are now available on Amazon, sold by Wipf and Stock of Eugene, OR, who also publish Jacques Ellul and William Stringfellow.)

Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929), one of the most daunting modern Jewish thinkers, exercises a profound influence on contemporary philosophy and modern Jewish thought. In this seminal study, Barbara Galli provides the first English translation of Franz Rosenzweig's Jehuda Halevi: Zweiundneunzig Hymnen und Gedichte, a German translation of the poems of the great medieval Jewish poet Jehuda Halevi, followed by a lively, interpretive response. Galli's primary aim is to explore Rosenzweig's statement that his Notes to Halevi's poems exemplify a practical application of the philosophic system he set out in The Star of Redemption. Through an extended, multifaceted investigation of Rosenzweig's thought, Galli uncovers his philosophy of translation, out of which she determines and unravels his philosophic conclusion and his belief that there is only one language. In the final chapters, she concentrates on the Notes to the poems, and in doing so attempts to philosophize according to Rosenzweig's own mandate: full speech is word and response.

As the Triune God created the world, so creation bears the signs of its Creator. This evocative book by an influential Christian thinker explores the pattern of mutual indwelling that characterizes the creation at every level. Traces of the Trinity appear in myriad ways in everyday life, from our relations with the world and our relationships with others to sexuality, time, language, music, ethics, and logic. This small book with a big idea--the Trinity as the Christian theory of everything--changes the way we view and think about the world and places demands on the way we live together in community.

There Is a Garden in the Mind presents an engaging look at the work and life of pioneering organic gardener Alan Chadwick and his profound influence on the organic farming movement. In this wide-ranging and philosophical memoir, author Paul Lee recounts his first serendipitous meeting with Chadwick in Santa Cruz, California, in 1967, and their subsequent founding of the Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz, the first organic and biointensive garden at a U.S. university. Today, there are few who would dispute the ecological and health benefits of organically produced food, and the student garden project founded by Chadwick and Lee has evolved into a world-renowned research center that helps third-world farmers obtain high yields using organic gardening. But when Chadwick and Lee first broke ground in the 1960s, the term "organic" belonged to the university's chemists, and the Chadwick Garden spurred a heated battle against the whole system of industrial existence. Lee's memoir contextualizes this struggle by examining the centuries-old history of the conflict between industrial science and organic nature, the roots of the modern environmental movement and the slow food movement, and the origin of the term "organic." His account of Chadwick's work fills in a gap in the history of the sustainable agriculture movement and proposes that Chadwick's groundwork continues to bear fruit in today's burgeoning urban garden, locavore, and self-sufficiency movements. Table of contents: Chapter one The English Gardener Arrives Chapter two The English Gardener Goes to Work Chapter three The Garden Plot Chapter four Goethe the Vitalist contra Newton the Physicalist Chapter five Urea! I Found It! Chapter six USA and Earth Day Chapter seven The Method Chapter eight Chadwick Departs Chapter nine A Moral Equivalent of War Chapter ten The Death of Chadwick Chapter eleven California Cuisine and the Homeless Garden Project Chapter twelve A Biodynamic Garden on Long Island Chapter thirteen Chadwick's Legacy
