Straightforward answers about Roman Catholicism for a Protestant audience The Roman Catholic faith is one of the world's most widespread religious traditions, yet the unique aspects of Roman Catholicism elicit perennial questions from adherents and outsiders alike. Such questions tend to fall into three major categories: historical backgrounds, theological matters, and personal relationships. Using Catholic Church documents and the writings of Catholic scholars, Baptist systematic theologian Gregg R. Allison distills the teachings of Catholicism around forty common questions about Catholic foundations, beliefs, and practices. The accessible question-and-answer format guides readers to the areas of interest, including: Where do Roman Catholic and Protestant beliefs differ? What happens during a Roman Catholic Mass? How does Roman Catholicism understand the biblical teaching about Mary? Who are the saints and what is their role? How can my Roman Catholic loved ones and I talk about the gospel? 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism explores theology and practice, doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and Mariology, contributions and scandals, and many other things, clarifying both real and perceived differences and similarities with other Christian traditions.

The first volume of Roman Questions appeared in 1995 and was received very positively by the scholarly community. The present collection contains 71 papers written mostly in English (with one paper in German and one in Latin) and predominantly published in the last 20 years in various leading journals in Europe and America. They are all reset, and supplied with addenda. There are also 5 inedita, and addenda to the previous volume. They deal with Roman republican and imperial history and constitutional law, prosopography, epigraphy, Latin philology, Roman religion, and the history of classical scholarship. They ask questions, try to answer them, and do not avoid polemic. They uphold the unity of Altertumswissenschaft: history cannot be understood without philology, and philology is blind without history; and history, law and literature are infused with ideology and religion. And the tool to knowledge is the painstaking linguistic dissection of texts.

Brennan's book surveys the history of the Roman praetorship, which was one of the most enduring Roman political institutions, occupying the practical center of Roman Republican administrative life for over three centuries. The study addresses political, social, military and legal history, as well as Roman religion. Volume I begins with a survey of Roman (and modern) views on the development of legitimate power—from the kings, through the early chief magistrates, and down through the creation and early years of the praetorship. Volume II discusses how the introduction in 122 of C. Gracchus' provincia repetundarum pushed the old city-state system to its functional limits.
