Excerpt from Roger Williams: Prophet and Pioneer of Soul-Liberty The four years of the great war have witnessed two astounding facts, namely, the recrudescence of an ancient barbarism and the world - wide application of the ideals of Christianity. During these momentous times the frontiers of barbarism and of civiliza tion were clearly marked. The greater part of the world declared its position and took sides with one or other of the contestants. The whole world was either for or against, either friend or foe to, the essential principles of a Christian civilization. Among those banished was Roger Williams, the advocate of religious liberty who also founded the colony of Rhode Island and established the first Baptist church in America. Williams opposed the Puritans' use of the Bible to persecute radicals who rejected the state's established religion. In retaliation against the use of scripture for violent purposes, Williams argued that religious liberty was a biblical concept that offered the only means of eliminating the religious wars and persecutions that plagued the seventeenth century.
