Robert Gober rose to prominence in the mid-1980s and was quickly acknowledged as one of the most significant artists of his generation. In the years since, his reputation has continued to grow, commensurate with the rich and complex body of work he has produced. Published in conjunction with the first comprehensive large-scale survey of the artists career to take place in the United States, this publication presents his works in all mediums, including individual sculptures and immersive sculptural environments, as well as a distinctive selection of drawings, prints, and photographs. Prepared in close collaboration with the artist, it traces the development of a remarkable body of work, highlighting themes and motifs that emerged in the early 1980s and continue to inform the artists work today. An essay by Hilton Als, and an in-depth chronology with extensive input from the artist himself, foregrounds images from Gobers archives, including many neverbefore- published photographs of works in progress.

'Interviews' collates, in a single volume, the major body of interviews conducted by the revered American critic and curator Robert Storr, encompassing engaging discussions with some of the most renowned names in the artworld over the last two centuries. The book features nearly 30 illustrated interviews with artists and curators, including Gerhard Richter,Alex Katz, Chuck Close, Richard Serra, Gabriel Orozco, Elizabeth Murray, Harald Szleeman, Catherine David and Mike Kelley. The introduction by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo precedes a conversation between herself and Storr in which they dissect the interview as a medium: discussing the ethics involved, the notion of technique and approach, alongside the limitations and difficulties of the process. 'Interviews' presents an important, stimulating chronicle of Storr's most essential discussions with an esteemed cast of interviewees.

This book explores how four contemporary artists—Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Robert Gober, and Damien Hirst—pursue the question of death through their fraught appropriations of Christian imagery. Each artist is shown to not only pose provocative theological questions, but also to question the abilities of theological speech to adequately address current attitudes to death. When set within a broader theological context around the thought of death, Bacon’s works invite fresh readings of the New Testament’s narration of the betrayal of Christ, and Beuys’ works can be appreciated for the ways they evoke Resurrection to envision possible futures for Germany in the aftermath of war. Gober’s immaculate sculptures and installations serve to create alternative religious environments, and these places are both evocative of his Roman Catholic upbringing and virtually haunted by the ghosts of his excommunication from that past. Lastly and perhaps most problematically, Hirst has built his brand as an artist from making jokes about death. By opening fresh arenas of dialogue and meaning-making in our society and culture today, the rich humanity of these artworks promises both renewed depths of meaning regarding our exit from this world as well as how we might live well within it for the time that we have. As such, it will be a vital resource for all scholars in Theology, the Visual Arts, Material Religion and Religious Studies.
