This volume is the first to combine latest information on viral, microbial and cellular proteolytic enzymes as potential targets for human therapeutics. Proteases control a large array of physiological reactions, and are involved in a variety of pathological processes for which effective medications are currently needed and/or being sought after. Although protease inhibitors have been investigated for many years, few have been employed therapeutically. Recent break- through by HIV protease inhibitors as therapeutic drugs has re-encouraged the search for inhibitors of other proteolytic enzymes. Klaus von der Helm, who described the first viral protease has brought leading experts together to discuss not only the success and problems of clinical use and continuing prospects, but to review further potential drug targets. This volume provides detailed information and evaluations of key viral, bacterial, fungal, and cellular proteases as potential future drug candidates.

Local Disaster Management explores what resilience means for local communities and local governments on the front line of responding to disasters and emergencies. Disaster management is often seen as a major international issue undertaken by global actors such as the UN, Red Cross and Red Crescent. Yet fundamentally, all disasters are local. Every disaster, regardless of its type, affects individuals, families and communities before they escalate to encompassing one or many communities or nations. This volume therefore explores fundamental issues of disaster and emergency management at the local level. What is resilience? What does resilience mean for a local government seeking to lessen the impact of disasters on their community? How do local governments adapt through their experiences of disasters and how do they recover from catastrophic experiences? This book explores these issues with chapters from top scholars in the field, draws out lessons for local government officials and disaster managers seeking to build community resilience, prepare their communities for a changing environment, and facilitate recovery after disasters strike. Local Disaster Management provides invaluable insight for local governments charged with managing the inescapable effects of climate change and the increasing frequency and severity of disasters, as well as for scholars of local governance, disaster resilience, government policy, and disaster management. The chapters were originally published as a special issue in Local Government Studies.

In today's business environment, leaders at all levels are facing enormous challenges when it comes to achieving and sustaining breakthrough operating results. Globalization, economic change, more stringent regulation, and tougher governance make realizing shareholder value increasingly difficult. Intelligent Leadership is written for leaders who want to become more effective, strategic, operationally focused, and balanced. It is for leaders who are striving to take control of their destiny and become the best they can be. In this groundbreaking book, leadership coach John Mattone--recently named to the "guru radar" by the prestigious Thinkers50--taps into his years of experience working with high-achieving professionals to give readers a roadmap for developing and mastering their executive maturity. Supplying three unique tools--the Wheel of Leadership Success, Map of Leadership Maturity, and the Leadership Enneagram--the book helps readers calibrate their abilities so they can simultaneously focus on their strengths and address their weaknesses. The goal is to improve key tactical competencies (such as critical and strategic thinking, decision-making, talent and team leadership, and communication) and integrate them with equally important inner traits like values, character, and beliefs in order to achieve their leadership potential. Featuring best practices, authoritative research, practical assessments, and enlightening examples of both good and bad leadership, this book equips readers with the knowledge, skills, and passion they need to become the leaders they were meant to be.

In July 1996, a conference was organized by the editors of this volume at the Mathematische Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach to honour Egbert Brieskorn on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Most of the mathematicians invited to the conference have been influenced in one way or another by Brieskorn's work in singularity theory. It was the first time that so many people from the Russian school could be present at a conference in singularity theory outside Russia. This volume contains papers on singularity theory and its applications, written by participants of the conference. In many cases, they are extended versions of the talks presented there. The diversity of subjects of the contributions reflects singularity theory's relevance to topology, analysis and geometry, combining ideas and techniques from all of these fields, as well as demonstrating the breadth of Brieskorn's own interests. The Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake Project is presently under construction and is being placed in tandem between Hartwell and Clark Hill, two existing multipurpose hydropower plants on the Savannah River. System operational simulations were performed in support of a feasibility study for the installation of pump turbines at Russell, using a version of the Corps of Engineers HEC-5C computer program modified for system power and pumped storage. Information developed from the simulations include system hydropower production, pumping energy requirements, daily reservoir pool fluctuations, and reservoir elevation statistics. This information was useful in judging the effects of the addition of pumped storage on system hydropower production and reservoir recreation useability, as well as in ascertaining efficient system operational methods. Findings of a study to quantify and then evaluate the contribution of initial soil flooding and decomposition of vegetation to the water quality of the newly filled Richard B. Russell Lake are reported herein. Samples of soils and vegetation were taken from three areas representing the most predominant types of soil vegetation within the boundaries of the lake. Using controlled conditions in the laboratory, it was found that both soils and vegetation can release significant quantities of oxygen-consuming materials and plant nutrients. Soil samples had an oxygen demand large enough to cause strong depletion of dissolved oxygen fro mthe overlying water at 5 and 12.5 C, while samples held at 20 C removed all dissolved oxygen within 30 to 40 days. Developmentof anoxic conditions resulted in the release of large quantities of dissolved organic matter, plant nutrients, iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Upon comparison of these observations with other preimpoundment and postimpoundment investigations, several measures of potenial use were found to reduce the impact of initial soil flooding and decomposition of vegetation on the initial water quality of Richard B. Russell Lake. These included: burning of herbaceous vegetation in the hypolimnion and removal of tops trimmed from trees from areas to be flooded by rpoject waters; application of the data in this report to reservoir operation through use of a mathematical water quality model; reduction of residence time for hypolimnetic waters in the reservoir through operation in the sluice gates; and use of the planned dissolved oxygen injection system during initial reservoir filling.
