Excerpt from Charter of the City of Tacoma: Washington Adopted October 16, 1909 We, the people of the City of Tacoma, a city of the first class of the State of Washington, under the authority of the Constitution and Laws of the State of Washington, do hereby adopt, publish and declare this to be our City Charter. Article I. Name, Boundaries, Powers, Rights And Liabilities. Section 1. Name, Boundaries and Wards - The municipal corporation now existing and known as the "City of Tacoma," shall remain and continue to be a body politic and corporate, under the same name and with the same boundaries, divided into the same wards, as now existing (except as in the next section of this Charter provided), with power and authority to change its boundaries in the manner authorized by law. Sec. 2. Boundaries Extend to Middle of Sound. - In addition to said boundaries, the powers and jurisdiction of the City of Tacoma are hereby declared to extend over any and all tide-lands intervening between any part of the heretofore existing boundaries of the City and the waters of Commencement Bay and Puget Sound, and over said waters to the middle line of said Bay and Sound, in every manner and for every purpose that such powers and jurisdiction could be exercised if such tidelands and waters had been specifically included within the City limits prior to the adoption of this Charter, the City of Tacoma hereby adopting and availing itself of all of the powers and jurisdiction conferred by Chapter III, Laws of Washington, 1909.
