"Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.

Annotation Kaufman prevents this summary of data on the fracture characteristics of aluminum alloys, broadly based on a publication by Alcoa in 1964, Fracture Characteristics of Aluminum Alloys. Coverage includes tensile properties as indicators of fracture behavior; notched-bar impact and related tests for toughness; notch toughness and sensitivity; tear resistance; fracture toughness; the interrelation of fracture characteristics; toughness at subzero and elevated temperatures; subcritical crack growth; and metallurgical considerations in fracture resistance. Most of the data is presented in only the English/engineering units, contrary to normal ASM International and Aluminum Association, Inc. policies. The author's credentials are not stated. c. Welding for Challenging Environments documents the proceedings of the International Conference on Welding for Challenging Environments held in Ontario, Canada on October 15-17, 1985. This compilation provides a unique reference to the state of technological development, research, and application of welded fabrications in challenging environments. This book discusses the developments in pulsed gas metal arc welding; pulsed FM-GMA welding; and narrow gap welding of pressure vessels. The fracture toughness considerations for offshore structures; microcomputer method for predicting preheat temperatures; and submerged arc welding of high yield strength steel are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the influence of nitrogen content on deposited weld metal notch toughness gas-metal-slag interactions of binary fluxes containing CaF2 and evaluation of susceptibility of welds made with a stable austenitic welding wire to hot cracking. This publication is a good source for welders and metallurgists, as well as students interested in welded fabrications in challenging environments.

The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to the fabrication of structural components creates the need for design methodologies supporting structural optimization approaches that take into account the specific characteristics of the process. While AM processes enable unprecedented geometrical design freedom, which can result in significant reductions of component weight, on the other hand they have implications in the fatigue and fracture strength due to residual stresses and microstructural features. This is linked to stress concentration effects and anisotropy that still warrant further research. This Special Issue of Applied Sciences brings together papers investigating the features of AM processes relevant to the mechanical behavior of AM structural components, particularly, but not exclusively, from the viewpoints of fatigue and fracture behavior. Although the focus of the issue is on AM problems related to fatigue and fracture, articles dealing with other manufacturing processes with related problems are also be included.

The International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC) is a forum for the exchange of information by experts undertaking and applying marine structural research. The aim of the ISSC is to facilitate the evaluation and dissemination of results from recent investigations, to make recommendations for standard design procedures and criteria, to discuss research in progress and planned, to identify areas requiring future research and to encourage international collaboration in furthering these aims. Ships and other marine structures used for transportation, exploration and exploitation of resources in and under the oceans are in the scope of the ISSC. The 20th International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC 2018) was held in (Liège) Belgium and Amsterdam (The Netherlands), 9–14 September 2018. The first volume of the proceedings contains the eight Technical Committee reports presented and discussed at the conference and the second volume contains the reports of the eight Specialist Committees. This third volume contains the Official discusser's reports, written discussions and floor discussions, and the replies by the committees.
