Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject History - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Oregon, language: English, abstract: Diplomatic history has been suffering an old-fashioned image within the historical science for a rather long time. Although there were no fewer conflicts in the world in the last decades, the attention of the historical profession to the research on official documents is quite low. As evidence of that, the number of diplomatic historians at most history departments around the world has shrunk continuously. Critics speak of outmoded methods, which are compared to new methods in modern subfields. It is their opinion that this subfield is unlikely to generate anything very creative. In spite of this accusation, the subfield of diplomatic history has unambiguously changed its face in recent years. Diplomatic historians have widened their perspective and do not only analyze diplomacy anymore. They deal with a bulk of new topics: like race, gender, or approaches borrowed from cultural studies. Though it will never be possible to establish an exact number, scholars of the German-American press have estimated that about 5000 newspapers and periodicals have been published in German in more than 300 years of German immigration to the United States. This collection of essays on various aspects of the German-American press shows clearly the role of that press in the process of acculturation of German immigrants on the one hand, and on the other, retention of some of the old institutions, most notably the German language. Bracketed between articles on the press of the colonial period and that of the present is a rich collection of essays on various aspects of the topic. While no one volume can adequately deal with all, or even nearly all, the aspects of the phenomenon, this contribution to the field of German-American Studies does present a rather broad spectrum of topics and, thus, serves as both a source of valuable information and an introduction to further work.

Discussions about fundamental historical events of the past century have invaded the public domain; Public opinion and policy-makers ask framers of the public image of the past to provide guidance, reassurance, and legitimisation. Increasing social heterogeneity and cultural difference force us to revise our traditional concepts of culture and examine the public, social and pedagogical implications of multiculturalism in an explicitly comparative perspective. This book explores how history has been used to support or oppose the political orders of our century as well as its great themes, and how historians have dealt with issues of scholarly objectivity, personal beliefs, and public commitment.
