This new volume presents an up-to-date review of modern materials and physical chemistry concepts, issues, and recent advances in the field. It presents a modern theoretical and experimental approach in applied physical chemistry. The volume discusses the developments of advanced chemical products and respective tools to characterize and predict the chemical material properties and behavior. With chapters from distinguished scientists and engineers from key institutions worldwide, the volume provides understanding through numerous examples and practical applications drawn from research and development chemistry. It emphasizes the intersection of chemistry, math, physics, and the resulting applications across many disciplines of science and explores applied physical chemistry principles in specific areas. At the same time, each topic is framed within the context of a broader more interdisciplinary approach, demonstrating its relationship and interconnectedness to other areas. This new book fills a gap within modeling texts, focusing on applications across a broad range of disciplines, and presents information on many important problems in physical chemistry. These investigations are accompanied by real-life applications in practice.

This book captures the messages from a workshop that brought together research managers from government, industry, and academia to review and discuss the mechanisms that have been proposed or used to assess the value of chemical research. The workshop focused on the assessment procedures that have been or will be established within the various organizations that carry out or fund research activities, with particular attention to the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). The book presents approaches and ideas from leaders in each area that were intended to identify new and useful ways of assessing the value and potential impact of research activities.

Data Fitting in the Chemical Sciences Peter Gans, School of Chemistry, The University of Leeds, Leeds, UK Data fitting is a technique of central importance in modern experimental science. It is the means by which data is tested against a model of the experimental system, be it a theoretical or empirical model. In this book an all-round approach is adopted in which the first stage of data-fitting is seen as data collection, the second is numerical processing and the third a critical evaluation of the 'goodness' of fit in both statistical and common sense terms. Each stage is considered in detail: the sources and nature of experimental errors; the theory of least-squares fitting; probability theory; hypothesis testing, and the application of scientific criteria. The theory is complemented by three chapters on a wide range of applications. The emphasis of this book is on methodology: why certain procedures are preferred rather than how any one procedure is implemented. The author aims to assist people in extracting from their data its full information content, i.e. to use their data, not abuse it.

Basic Science Methods for Clinical Researchers addresses the specific challenges faced by clinicians without a conventional science background. The aim of the book is to introduce the reader to core experimental methods commonly used to answer questions in basic science research and to outline their relative strengths and limitations in generating conclusive data. This book will be a vital companion for clinicians undertaking laboratory-based science. It will support clinicians in the pursuit of their academic interests and in making an original contribution to their chosen field. In doing so, it will facilitate the development of tomorrow's clinician scientists and future leaders in discovery science. - Serves as a helpful guide for clinical researchers who lack a conventional science background - Organized around research themes pertaining to key biological molecules, from genes, to proteins, cells, and model organisms - Features protocols, techniques for troubleshooting common problems, and an explanation of the advantages and limitations of a technique in generating conclusive data - Appendices provide resources for practical research methodology, including legal frameworks for using stem cells and animals in the laboratory, ethical considerations, and good laboratory practice (GLP)
