There are more than 13,000 animal shelters in the United States, and each year approximately four million dogs are turned in to these shelters. Only thirty-five percent of these dogs are adopted out; thirty-one percent are euthanized. There are a vast number of rescue organizations in the United States, and the volunteers working with them number in the thousands.
