Excerpt from Reports of Cases in the Courts of Star Chamber and High Commission The greater part of the present volume was copied for the late Mr. Bruce, who undertook to edit it. He probably thought, and, if so, the Society will doubtless agree with him, that it might do much to dispel the ignorance which exists on the working of the Courts of Star Chamber and High Commission, if a complete set of reports of cases within a limited period were published. In this way the attention of the student would be drawn from the few State Trials, which necessarily occupy so large a space in our histories, to the ordinary course of business which went on uninterruptedly, except during the vacations. The cases in the Star Chamber reach from Easter Term, 1631, to Trinity Term, 1632; whilst those in the High Commission Court begin in October, 1631, and extend to June, 1632. Of the Star Chamber cases, those given in the pages from the beginning of the volume to page 111, as well as the High Commission cases from page 181 to the end of 269, are taken from Harleian MS. 4130; whilst the remainder of the volume is taken from Rawlinson MS., A128, in the Bodleian Library.
